Rudy would be short for Rudolph and that of course is a man's name. I think "Rudy" is a really cute name for him.

Well hes a-hole now. SOMEone threw a fully pipped egg out of the nest today. I found it when I came back from my visit with Yoda. It was jammed between the cage grate at the bottom. I thought for sure the chick was dead and dry inside, but when I took it in hand and gently cracked the last tiny piece open a bit. The chick was alive and moving and really just trying to finish its hatch. So I gave it to Inchy and he immediately started to pick it up and eat the shell like ON the spot. I thought he was gonna kill and eat the chick the way he was carrying on. But he knew best. He must have known the chick was ready and all the vessels were dry and ready. So NOW, I am on pins and needles waiting for them to feed the bloody thing. So Pass, what do I do? I took the chanse and gave him a drop of sugar water, but am so afraid to suffocate him. Also am undecided to leave him under Inchy overnite thinking he wont feed during the nite like last time and the chick will starve. So not sure to put him in the incubator overnite and feed him and then give back in the morning or just try to feed him under them during the nite? Pass, what do u do? Do u remove the chick and feed and put back or just try to feed while under the parents??? Also my comp is out again, I am up the street at the side of the road, typing AGAIN. I dont know why this keeps happening every few weeks? Seems to be during the rains, which it is doing now for the last week or so. |

CBL, I never remove the babies from under the parents or fosters. So I feed them then return them until the parents start feeding and usually it is the next day. |

Well I checked the nest box and the other 2 of 3 have hatched today and are beggin much stronger than this guy, so not sure if there is something wrong with it that the parents knew about. It may have been weak from hatching out or sick or what? So I will feed it till I see it beggin strong or dying. If it begs well, then it can go back, I have a feeling tho that it may have something wrong and not be a strong viable chick. It may have injuries from being dumped from the nest onto the grating. Will check if the 4th egg hatches out or not. I have no problem feeding till weaned but its a 50- 50 chanse with infection. I have it on save-it tho. So for now it has the best chanse it can get. I have noticed some peticial spots on the top of the head, it may be ill or malformed or who knows what? Doesnt seem to lift its head up well for begging, just kind of keeps his head down and opens the mouth from a laying position. So this could be why parents tossed it from inside the egg still. Time will tell. |

Forgot to mention, comp still out and Im still typing from the ditch up the street lol. The guy who has the quaker that built that big nest, well bird is doing much better, almost back to normal and will be done meds by friday. I extended the treatment 3 days tho. Just to be sure. Anyway, I called him and asked for some teeny weeny paint brushes to feed the goudian bub and he drove over post haste and gave me 3 brand new ones size, 0-1-2. They have but a few bristles on them and they are working great for feeding. No risk of aspiration with this method. Only if I OVER feed/fill the crop. So far so good. It was so nice of him to do that for me. See, when u help people out, they resiprocate. He also bought Trooper a 35 dollar tub of feed supplement. I was stunned but so appreciative. Also gave me 3 small jars that hold about an ounce of water as I had mentioned that I love little jars and use them all the time. He remembered that comment and gave me 3 of them. How nice. Little things make me happy. Will have to drive back not to check Rogers eye and see if the lilacs are feeding their 2 chicks and see if the 3rd hatched out yet. |

Sounds like he appreciates what your doing for him and his birdie, nice to hear. I am really glad to hear his bird is on the mend. That bird is so adorable. Is there anything you can use on Rogers eyes to reduce the itch factor. Poor little guy its healing but itching probably no wonder he wants to scratch it. How is the other birdie doing, sorry I forgot the name the one that had the massive head wound or as the breeder called it the "rash". |
