My waterslager had stopped singing, he was getting light. His poops were moundy and wet, then they turned to literally green piss and I mean piss water from his butt, bad enough to get me on the phone worried to the breeder. Tried a few different meds, nothing really worked. The sulpha drug helped a bit and I think the giardia meds at 4 times the dose worked a bit. But since I dont really know what he has, I was worried. So as I am getting prices on the phone for fecals and smears and ova and parasites and gram stains and culture and sensativities. Dont I notice that one, two, three, four more birds have it. I was FREAKIN!!! Two of the FIVE now, include Cricket my beautiful cinnamon violet spangle budgie hen AND brace urselves, BOOBOO. I was crying when I saw booboo had it and I RAN to the vets FAST. I would pay anything for those tame birds NOT to die. Now I could have just went for a culture and sen at my local vets for 100 bucks, but I decided to go to my other local vet because he actually treats birds as the other doesnt but would run the tests I requested. Anyway 240 bucks later, he thinks it may be a bad case of Giardia. Now I had treated for that already, but I think the drug I use is not strong enough, heres why, it is only a 6% solution. He has and prefers to use fenbendazole, mine is ranidazole and any zole drug will do including metronidazole which I have on hand as well. Anyway I asked if the bug can become immune or resistant to certain drugs and he said yes. So I dont mind using his drugs and I told him he has to sell me enough to do the entire flock. I will also ask him for meds for e coli and worming just to have on hand for future maintenance treatment. So for now, Booboo is still singing away to me, eating my food with. When I eat, I place his little cage beside me and he bites the bars and lets me know he wants to share and we share our pasta noodles and our carrots. The others are all still singing accept for the waterslager. The one thing that was REALLY interesting was this. Vet said if it were a bacteria or illness that the bird would act sick and lethargic and fluffed and bla. He said if they act fairly normal, then its a nuicense but not life threatening. So since nothing has died, its most likely this nasty giardia. He also said I can just go to toys r us and buy a kiddie microsope and look for my own parasites and worms and that I can get the oil floatation thingys at the local medical supply. So I WILL do that for sure.

Oh forgot to mention he also did a cloacal swab for cricket. I was worried but he managed to get the entire soft part of the q tip right up into her vent. She was amazing. She didnt bite either of us, she was sweet and only did her complain noise. She is worth her weight in gold. It was for her that I went to the vets today. She is my baby. I could not live with myself if she had died for some stupid reason like gooney did. When I think of the money I spend for massage therapy, or my sauna or whatever, this is VERY WELL spent. For the lives of my precious birds :). We dont tell the hubby tho, he would have a stroke for sure. He just thinks I talk to the vets over the phone and get advise Ignorance is bliss. But if he did see my crying over a bird or illness, he would be the first to drive me to the vets, hes that sweet

Does it ever stop for you????? You just went through the mite thing. This is just mind blowing to me. OMG....BooBoo. I'm so sorry Maryannseems like you spend a lot of time fighting these things. I think you told me before that these things happen when you have a lot of birds. I just wouldn't be able to handle it like you and Pass. Very scary. I'm glad you are okay and the birdies got more meds.

Ya well check out what thought woke me up this am, REALLY early, made me jump out of bed and wake up the sick birds and give them all keaopectate in the mouth. I did that yesterday as well as it binds any toxins in the body, via the clay in the product. I had read years ago that I could put some in the drinkers for maintenance. I dropped it in their beaks tho. See my thought below!!! I already called the vet and am waiting for some directions. OMG, I just thought of something in my sleep. I gave all those birds with the mucousy poop that is literally WATER out that end some eucalyptus leaves to try to clean out their system. I have done this for years now. BUT, I got some new plants, and even tho I washed the leaves. Every single one of those birds has liquid diarrhea!! Could those leaves be toxic????? What if they were sprayed with a pesticide. Now they came from a reputable farmer that is very health conscious , but????? I will call them today when they open. Here is my suspicion. There are two finches in one cage, one is blind, she did not eat the leaf, her poops are normal and the other one (booboo) has diarrhea. Also, both the budgie and one canary HAD different types of diarrhea BEFORE the euc leaves. One had dark green flat diarrhea and the other had mounding diarrhea or the wet stool u thought may be polyuria remember. Well both are now this super wet mucously liquid!!!! So I woke up and gave the birds some keaopectate to coat the intestines. The question is this, if they were "poisoned or irritated from the leaves" What do I give them as an antidote and will the toxin harm their kidneys or kill them, it has been 2 days ago now. ????? I have to go call the vets answering service now and leave a msg. I hope to God they will be fine. Will the madness EVER end alreay. I am optimistic as Booboo was singin in the car to me when we were driving to and back from the vets. He was eating and shared my pasta. So I hope all it is, is an irritation for them. But this still does not address the original diarrhea in Cricket or the Waterslanger. I hope they find something in the stool already. This not knowing is driving me nuts. Booboo is doing ok, they all are actually holding their own for now, cricket is still not fat enough for my liking, both the poops are still not right. I have them all on metronidazole till I hear from the vets on monday. I read on the net that I can do 5 days on and 7 off, for 3 treatments, also Pass has a similar protocol. The vet I am dealing with is great, he took good time, he handled the bird as little as possible as I asked and he let me assist. He said he will help me to medicate and will make up individual treatments for each of the sick birds by their weights and then a flock treatment prevention for the rest. Cricket was being silly today and I have up'd her feeds to at least 3 a day as I want to put some weight on her. The waterslager started singing today, very surprising and happy. His and the Norwich poop have solidifed from a watery green piss to a moundy soft stool. So this is an actual improvement. I gave them a third dose of kaeopectate in the beaks today. All of the sick ones. This will coat and protect their guts till we find the cure. |

Wow, CBL, I've been reading the whole thing... Does remind me of what I'm going through but hopefully all your birds will be back to normal soon. I have switched from ronidazole to metronidazole now just to prevent the bugs from building up any resistance to the drugs. |

Pass the problem with that is I JUST read that Metronidazole and Fenbendazole is TOXIC to finches!!!! So I took mine out!!! I will talk to the vet and see he reccomends when I show him the book that says that. It also said that no giardia has been found in finches or canaries??? I find that hard to believe, pass what does your smears show then? This info I got from my avian medicine book. Pass also none of my birds have died tho. I hope thats a distinct difference. I hope it shows something. I will be pissed at the vet if it doesnt as he refused to take the swab of fecal matter I got from cricket when her poops were dark flat green the day before, the euc leaves made it mucousy. I would make him re do it for free. Edited by Crazy Bird Lady, May 2 2010, 06:39 PM.
