Boomers toe nails seem to be getting very long, and I really have no idea how to cut them.. Also her beak is overgrown I believe so any information on trimming or even if I need to trim the beak at all would be greatly appreciated..
Im assuming with the toe nails you could just use a small pair of scissors or maybe a file but Im not to sure so advice would be great :)
Thanks

Lukea, use a human pair of nail clippers for both. Just be very careful with the beak, if cut too far back, it will bleed. So only the very tip of it and just a little and then again in a few weeks.

If it does bleed, u need to do one of two things. Either use a styptic powder or quick stop or anything to stop the bleeding or even better and instant is to heat a flat butter knife blade on the stove and touch the end of the beak or toenail to cauterize, it works amazing and quick and u will hear a sindging sound. I had to do this to a dogs toenail a few weeks ago as the bleeding would not stop.

IF u are too afraid, go to a vet and have them show u how to do it OR, sometimes pet stores have someone on staff who knows and will do it for a small fee.

How in the world do you hold a birdie and lop off the end of his beak?????????????

I would think just seeing those clippers coming at them would cause them to have a heart attack!

I take it that Boomer is very tame?

Its very easy, u just hold the bird in hand with the head or face between the index and thumb and u carefully trim each side on and angle line following the growth of the beak and just trim each side towards the point of the beak or just nip off a very small amount off the tip. I may try to load a videoclip of it when I trim chopper then. See if the hubby can help. I lost the viewfinder on my camera, it doesnt show anymore, just white snow like on a tv screen. We have to guesstimate the focus lol. Chopper is due anyway.

Would love to see a video on how to do the beak, Teamo still has beak issues, he gets the extra to a really thin bit and usually break it off, but I would love to just clip it. I am just nervous and my hubby is terrified to help. So if I could see a video where you do it yourself I would do it.

I do Ducky's feet & only messed with his beak once. OY VEY!!! He hates it. He'll let me file his toe nails with a nail file but only for a few minutes and then he starts squawking up a STORM like I'm killing him. If he gets to be too wiggly or nippy, I wrap him in a towel and pull out a leg and do it one at a time. Since he HATES the towel wrap, he's learned to just tolerate me messing with his toes but he's not learned to tolerate it quietly.

I'm a woos so I'm not comfortable cutting his toe nails in case he bleeds. I just file it down with an emery board. I do that about once or twice a month to keep them trim.

If Marianne could post a video, that would be awesome so I can learn how to do all the birds. I've never done the Mertz's or Pippy. I've only done Ducky.

Thanks Cbl I will give the toes a try and will study her beak a bit first just so I know where to trim. Will probably get a smaller pair of clippers too the ones we have at the moment are pretty big.

I don't think I every really noticed their beaks.

I don't see anything unusual though now that I'm looking. :ermm:
