He's okay but here's what happened.

I was getting ready the other morning and needed to get a move on. I went looking for Ducky as I needed to get him fed. He happened to be under my bed. I called him but did not see him as he came out so I walked in further looking for him. Before I knew it, he screamed because I started to step on him. Obviously I did not see him when I did that. Had I put my full weight down, my life would have changed for I would be mourning the death of my precious Ducky. God saved his life. He screamed so I was able to pull away before any harm. I picked him up, checking his whole body. I lifted his wings to make sure nothing hurt, pressed his whole body to see if he winced or anything. I lifted wings, moved his legs back and forth, bent his toes to make sure nothing hurt. I pressed his stomach, moved his head around, etc. He let me do it but he sure had a curious look as I was doing all these "weird" things to him. He was fine but he sure milked it. He loved the attention.

This caused me to recall an an incident of a couple of years ago when I was walking down the hall and I tripped over my own feet. I had already seen Ducky in the hallway so no big deal. I must have caught my shoe in the carpet but in any event, I was falling down. It was no big deal as it was an empty hallway and there was nothing that could hurt me. I was already reaching out to brace my fall and knew I was not going to be hurt, only perhaps my ego for tripping over my own feet. It was just going to be a small fall on a carpeted floor. But in those couple of seconds on my way down, I was horrified and frightened out of my mind because Ducky was going to be crushed under my knee and there was nothing I could do. I saw a simple fall turn into a tragedy and I was helpless to change it. Gravity was going to win this one. At the last minute, he just happened to move away.

I don't know how to get Ducky from walking. He likes to walk across the floor from place to place. Long time ago, I had read on bird groups and sites that a good punishment when they bite you is to place them on the floor because they don't like being on the floor. Well, that's exactly what I did with him in the beginning. He hated it and would immediately find a place to climb up so he wouldn't be down so low. Well one day, I set him on the floor and instead of looking for something to climb up on, he looked around and started exploring. He hasn't stopped.

I'm very careful when I walk around because I need to know where Ducky is so I don't step on him. Today when I was in the shower, he was perched on his cage. But I knew that eventually he would come looking for me. And sure enough, when I finished my shower and stepped into the hallway, he was exactly where I knew he would be -- outside the bathroom door waiting for me. Even when I get up at night to use the restroom, I check to make sure I know where Ducky is.

I don't know what to do to keep him from wandering around. Any suggestions?

Sorry Tish I don't have any idea but I'm sure someone on this site can help.

I just always have to laugh at Ducky. The idea that he is standing outside the bathroom door waiting for you is just way too funny. :D :D

Ya, instead of letting him walk around on the floor, constantly pick him up and put him on something high, like the back of a chair or try putting up a few different tree perches around the house in each room and constantly put him on them and maybe one day, he will do what he did with the floor and want to be up all the time.

One thing is for sure life is never dull when Ducky is around.

Yeah, I do that -- when I'm passing by him and I see him marching along, I do pick him up and put him high. Unfortunately for me, Ducky has a mind of his own and Duck is going to do what Ducky is going to do. For instance, just today he had places to go and things to see. I picked him up and put him on the back of a chair in which he promptly climbed down and proceed to go where he was headed. I even bought one of those stands where he can't climb down -- those birdy stands. Well, that didn't work -- he SCREAMED AND SCREAMED AND SCREAMED. I wasted a lot of money on that. He doesn't mind if I pick him up and put him on something but he wants to maintain the ability to climb down.

Guess I just have to be very, very, very careful around him -- and I pretty much am. I don't just walk around, I keep my eyes on the ground when I'm walking around and I walk slowly in case he's around the corner.

I guess I'm so used to it that it is normal around here.

Everyone is forgetting that Ducky does not believe he is a bird. We are a little slow in realizing that. If you take to long in the bathroom does he start peaking at the door.

LOL, never thought of that. I'm just so used to his ways that it just seems normal to me. I guess if I thought about it, he does act a little bizarre for a bird. Maybe he's having an identity crisis.

As to the bathroom door, I never close it so it's fully closed -- so if I'm in there too long, he can push it open. I learned not to close it too tightly because a couple of times when I was in there and he wanted in, he started squawking loudly.

Too bad u couldnt put a collar and a bell on him like a cat. U could actually put a tiny cat bell on the back of his head feathers with crazy glue. He may be able to scratch it off tho. They use glue to pin shelties ears, it works great and wears off after a few weeks.

Hey, wouldn't that be a GREAT idea? I'm going to think about it and maybe give a try and see if I can get away with it.
