Well, not sure what will happen but am hopeful. This am I found a baby zebbie at the bottom of the flight with blood from the top of its head. When I uncoverd the birds, he was not there and after about 30 minutes I noticed him there. He feel from about 3.5 feet up right on the top of his head. I figured he will die. But I warmed him up, put him in the brooder, and waited. Within a few minutes, he was gaping for food. I had stopped the bleeding and the head looks a little flattened on top, but not sure if the skull is soft enought to recover, or hard enough to crack, but he seems fine and its been 3.5 hours since I found him. I checked the rest of the eggs and a few are fertile but she throws out some of them. So anything that looks clear, I toss and what looks fertile I put back. I put a towel there now so if anything else falls out, it will have a soft landing. Im pissed because I knew the one egg was fertile but not aware it was so close to hatching. And of course I saw NO eggshell, so the others must have eaten it. I had set up two canaries to hatch out and sit on that egg, but they werent ready yet and are still building. I wish I had known the date so this would have been avoided. I hope he makes it. If so, his name will either be Dizzy or Humpty Dumpty.

I've had babies with worse injuries thrive. They are so resilient. Ok great, now we get to see another baby grow up... YAY! |

I hope so, I just now went back to the nest, saw that the hen is sitting tight now on the remaining eggs. She only thru out one. I have tilted the nest upward now so the door opening is not straight or tilted down and I put the bub back in. I will set the timer on for every 30 min to see if I see it on the towel on the bottom of the cage. If it is out even one more time, I will keep it out into the brooder. I only put it back for now to give it the best chanse for survival with the early crop milk. Less chanse for it to get infection when I pull it in a week and a half's time. I know it had JUST fallen out as it wasnt there when I answered the phone and then boom there is was a few minutes later as I pace when I talk. I only noticed when I walked back in as I saw a lone canary checking it out from a distance on the cage floor. So Im glad it alerted me. The bub was still warm enough, just injured. He is gaping well and I am determined not to let this one or any subsequent die. It looks like at least another 3 eggs are fertile. I took 2 clear canary eggs and have put them into the brooder so they act as little ceramic heaters to keep the bub warm if and when it has to go back in. |
