Well, Went this morning to put egg food for my Socies pair raising 5 bubs and both parents jumped out of the nest to eat the food then they went back to feed the bubs. A few hours later, went to renew the food and only the male came out to eat. This was very unusual, so I opened the box and there was mom brooding the bubs so I poked her to encourage her to go out but she didn't budge. This is when I picked her up and found out she was DEAD!!!!! I'm still in shock, she was very healthy so how did she die so quickly?! I'm vey sad right now |

Oh Pass how horrid, I am so very sorry for you. Birds hide their illness so well sometimes its impossible to tell they're sick. |

Oh pass that is sad, as u know from all the stuff that happens with me, sometimes they just dont show it, here is a list of possibilities, so dont beat urself up or fret. Sudden heart attack going light, u cant tell unless the bird is in hand, with all the feathers they appear a good size. age, do u know how old she was? any illness, bacterial. Will the dad raise them all????? |

Pass I'm so sorry. That was such a shock. I just don't know how you guys do this. I hope mine never get babies. I'm just not here enough to help them out with a thing like that. Too much saddness for me. : |

Vi, the saddness is brutal, and yet, I crave the babies and the tameness. The reason I keep going is that they just dont live long enough lives. My original Grey spangle hen Raina, dropped dead off the perch a few days ago, she was only 3, no illness, no nothing, she was a great weight and very fit, she looked MINT. Just like Pass, who knows, I suspect a heart attack. Nothing u can do about that, my only regret was I didnt breed her as she had THE most beautiful crisp markings. But if I had to have a bird go, that is the best for me. Sudden and with no suffering or lingering. THAT is stressful. So far over the years I have had at least 3 die that way. |

What struck me the most was that she did not look dead. She had her eyes open and was brooding the bubs with her abdomen feathers parted to expose her brooding patch. When I picked her up I noticed that she did not go light as she was plump with good muscle tone on her breastbone. Shye was not old nor sick so It must have been a heart attack. The dad stopped feeding the bubs so i distributed them all over the place in my other nests. I will supplement the feeding as each nest now has 5 bubs in it. |

I wonder if she just died in her sleep pass, where her legs out straight behind her? When they die from sudden death, they have a tidge of a seizure and thier legs straighten out behind. If they were under her as normal, I would say it was in her sleep. sounds like it was not painful and sudden. Poor thing. So sad. Im so glad u have others to raise the bubs, thats a relief. |

The legs were under her as normal. It doesn't look like she seizured. She had a normal brooding hen posture only she was stiff. That means she didn't suffer then, I'm at least glad for that. |

Ya, thats right pass, good for you. She must have just gone in her sleep. Thats the BEST way to go, but certainly still upsetting to lose a bird eh.

Her mate is the most upset I guess... He's been calling for her all day. I put him in the community aviary with the other Bengies so he'd calm down. It's working so far. |
