Ok, so check this out. I find a breeder IN KESWICK 2 minutes up the street where I live hahahh, found him on kijiji.

He has 9 babies, 5 left. Hens and cocks, but of course I want a cock bird for color and song and jumping ability hahha.

7 months old.

GET THIS. he wanted 70 bucks each, cheap considering 120 to 150 everywhere else.

I hate laying out cash for birds as they come to me free most of the time. I dont like to contribute to the homeless rescues, but I made an offer of,....... 2 dog grooms for the bird, which is a total value of 80 bucks for him. He was thinking about it. He has a hairy westie that needs a groom NOW hahah. So anyway, I thought why should I screw myself out of 10 bucks. So I re offered, ONE groom, no bath for a 40 dollar value, and 30 cash bringing it to the 70 he wanted and he said YES aahahah, how stund is that. Oh well, he is bringing me the dog tomorrow, and I will bring it back with a cage and collet my bird. :) I think my options are a blackface normal or a redface black throat whatever??? Pass, I will post pics of the parents and tell me what the male bubs will be? I would prefer a black face but would take a dark red face as well. How do we telll whta is male and what is female, he said the males are already singing and jumping, is that true at that age????

Here r the pics of the parents and 2 of the bubs. One bub is half colored already.

Mom and dad, so what will bubs be?

Well CBL,
Congrats on the bub, however I am shocked that the breeder was willing to sell ONE bird since they are social birds and need the contact of other Goulds with them.
I would never sell or give one bird to poeple who don't have other Goulds already.
Anyway the bubs should be red heads unless dad was split to black then you'd get reds and blacks.
If the bubs are half colored, u can tell by the chest color as it would be purple in males and lavender in females. The half colored bub on the right in the second photo is a male.

Pass r u sure, the dad is more blue and that bub is more purple??? If you are 100% sure then I will take that bub.

He actually asked me about that saying, they need another finch with, but I read that they can be housed with other finches and dont necessarily need another gould with? My plan was to put him with the other zebbies and socies. I may down the road get another hen but I dont want to breed so would rather not. Also the waxbill I have preens and fusses up a hen zebbie, we were worried that he needed his own kind but is doing well and having fun with the others.

Well CBL, being with other finches is better than left alone... but I hope you will get another one down the road, even if it was another male.
Anyway, you could only guess the head color if there was new feathers coming through otherwise it's not possible.

And for reference, on that pic the hen is in the middle. The others are males. You should be looking for chest that bright as opposed to muted like the hen's.

Ya but pass, if muted it could just be a dilute no?

On a dilute the chin is always grey and also there are no dilute hens... A dilute is always a male...

Ok, Pass, I got the male bub, how do I tell what color the head will be, either black or red?? I see a hint of the blue on the back of the head that separates the black and red. I think I hope it is a red head, instead of a black lol. He seems sooooooooooooooooooo intelligent, very surprising.
I am tossing the names of Pogo, Bungee, or Rainbow, call name bobo.

Also, can u tell me if these zebbies r hens?????

CBL,
If ur really in a hurry, pluck a few feathers from the head and u'll find out soon enough. A lot of breeders do it.

And as for the zebbies it's very hard to find out for the whites and saddlebacks. The grey one is a hen, but the one on the right is probably a male and the middle one, I'd say male also judging by the red beak.
