This is why severe macaws have a reputation This just happened a few minutes ago. I was reading email. I'm just showered and relaxed. Ducky walked over to me like he always does. He likes it when my skin is still damp. I know he does because he snuggles against me more when I am newly showered. But today, for some odd reason that I don't know, he climbed up on the chair that i'm sitting on and instead of climbing up to my shoulder, he bit me on the side (my rib cage area). It hurt. It wasn't a hard enough bite to break the skin but it hurt. I have no idea what got into him. I yelled at him and grabbed his beak. He submitted. He then acted as if nothing was wrong, being all lovey dovey. Then he bit my finger. Again, not hard but it stung. So I picked him up and put him on his cage. He tried to climb down. I yelled (and i hate yelling) NO and picked him up and put him on his cage. He's back to normal now but for some reason only known to him, he was in a mood. Severe macaws do have a reputation for being beaky (using their beak against us). Despite all that, I could NEVER EVER imagine Ducky not in my life. He's too precious to me. |

All I can say to that is "I don't like surprises." "Bad boy Ducky!" I think he needs a donut maybe that would help his attitude.

Scary, but we always have to remember that birds and all animals, will always be "wild", who knows what instinct they are reacting too. I know I trust Cappone completley, having said that I am still careful when he is around my face, he is lovely and never bites me but in the back of my mind I know if he was in a mood and just pecked at me he could do some damage. When he is molting I leave my glasses on when he is on my shoulder. |

True, they are wild in their very nature. Even knowing that, Ducky has preened my eyelashes -- I have no idea why I'm so stupid to allow him to do that. I remember one time when he was standing no my shoulder. I forget what I did but I was in the bathroom getting ready for work. I was standing in front of mirror. I watched him get mad and get ready to bite me. This all happened very quickly. I saw him move his head around looking for place to bite me. He could have easily bit me on the face -- EASILY. That would have been the easiest place to bite me. He didn't. He bent down and bit my shoulder. It's almost as if he knew that biting me on the face was going too far. Weird. |

Okay guys.....guess I better stick with the budgies....they don't want to do anything with me. I would tend to get TOO TRUSTING and that doesn't sound like a good idea. |

Gosh, I'm making Ducky out to be an ogre -- he's not. He really is a love bug. But birds will bite. Ducky's bites are far and few between. And once you get to know your bird, as I have Ducky, I can usually read his body language. Yesterday's bite was not one of those "nailed me" bites. It was a hard nip as he didn't break skin but not a full fledged bite. Severe macaws are known nippers but they really are love bugs in my opinion. I can do pretty much anything to Ducky and he puts up with it. I've earned his trust but birds will be birds. |
