I did not post before but Teamo has developed an overgrown beak so I found an Avian vet about 1/2 hour from home that from everyone I talk to is great. I will know today at 5:20. He better be good, Teamos' beak is overgrown and needs to be dealt with, I am way too afraid to do it myself besides I would need someone to hold Teamo and no one is willing. Keep good thoughts for him, he will hate the car ride and the vet i am sure. However he usually gets mad in stressful times instead of afraid which should work in his favour, however, I am quite sure the vet will take a good nip or two. Oh well its part of his job. Actually the whole idea terrifies me because when one of the birds or the dog is ill I am a nervous wreck. I will post as soon as we get home. |

Righto, do u not have mineral block or cuttlebone in the cage, if not do so, and also give him fruit tree branches to chew. I wish u had posted before as I would have asked u to tell the vet to feel the abdomen and do a full checkup. |

He has a mineral block and a cuttle bone. He also has a tree branch. He uses all. I emailed you. Fatty Liver Disease, I feared a liver tumour. Not enough veggies and fruit and he is eating too much seed and pellets. So the vet gave me a routine to follow, no matter how scarce time is, I wil make it happen. He deserves no less. Vet also gave me new vitamins for him to take daily. Vet did a really good check up, no masses in the abdomen. Crop is good etc., This vet spent about 40 minutes with him and myself so I feel pretty good about his care. If no emergency he is to go back in one month. Feels crappy to know his diet made him ill, I guess I did not pay close enough attention to how much he ate..... |

Can you go ahead and email me the diet and changes the vet made and even post them here for all of us to use as a guideline to help keep our budgies healthy, thanks. |

Sure will, I will post all the information tomorrow. Tonight is an early night for me, I hope, though I think I will end up on the internet confirming what the vet said. Got trust issues with docs. |

Okay..now I am scared. Too many seeds? That is all my birds eat except for weekend broc. I don't give them any thing! CBL what am I suspose to be doing? Some sites I read said not to give vitamins. Any suggestions? Right now everyone is heathly and happy. But as you say as they get older. I realy don't have much experience with birds. I would feel soooo bad if it was my fault that they died. |

Debbie don't be afraid and don't panic. I am going to post some of the info tomorrow the vet told me, frankly I am a bit of a skeptic about docs., so I am trying to surf the net and gather more info. to confirm what he said before I post. Your birds are happy and healthy so if you need to make diet changes, you will. Its just now that Teamo is ill, time is not on my side and I need to change his diet asap, not always easy with a stubborn budge plus I need to make sure I help give his liver a rest. Your birds like broccoli already so adding other fruits or veggies will not be to difficult. Take a deep breath, do not get into the blaming yourself, first it hasn't happened and second you are a loving birdie mom so you need not feel guilt. Of course it would be nice if I could take my own advice. Talk to you all in the am, I think this is going to be a long night for me. Once mom is resting I will be back on the net. Of course it helps that Teamo is playing and singing. however this is way past his bed time, so he is going to bed. He needs extra sleep, so he should have been in bed hours ago. Crap. |

First things first, violet, birds need 12 hours sleep, so out the lights or cover the cages for at least that long. Then good food, incorporate pellets with the seeds, even if they toss most of them, they will eventually get some. Also offer and keep offering veggies and fruits daily, they may go untouched for weeks, the boom one day for whatever reason, they start chewing. YES, to vitamins, always air on the side of caution as if eating pellets, they will get some. So, I agree that 3 days on vits every couple of weeks will help but not overload. Lets face it, we cant give them everything they would get in the wild, but we can cover most minerals and vits with the supplements. So go for it. Just remember, everything in moderation. Too much of any ONE thing is bad. |
