Canaries under glass; cute story

Crazy Bird Lady

Well, sometimes I have a bird or two that wants back in to sit on their clear eggs, or visa versa. So I am so afraid that the birds will get out of my hand when transporting from inside to an outside cage. The canaries are notorious for this as I dont want to squish them. So, this is what I devised lol.

I have a small canary sized glass container with a lid that is squarish, or more like a rectangle but deep. So I put the hen in the glass walk out to the cage on my deck, it is slim enough to get thru a sliding cage door, then I let the door slide down over my wrist/hand and I release the bird by lifting the lid. It works for bringing one hen in as well and not losing them in hand. Works like a charm.

I have heard so many stories of birds slipping thru the cage door when open or out of hand. My worst fear! This seems to be quite safe as the first thing the bird wants it alltitude, so I make sure I do this on the floor of the cage and the lowest door. Took a few cute transit pics tho, I couldnt resist.

They have abosulutely no fear of me or my transportation methods and are quite comfy lol. I think I will designate one of these to the birds and punch minute holes in the tops of the containers in the event I get side tracked and leave one in the glass. Not likely to happen but, murphys law for sure. I just thought they were precious. :)

I find that amazing that they have no fear. I always thought canaries were very nervous birds. Are they hand raised? I would love to have a bird I could pick up. My budgies aren't afraid of me but the sure don't want me to pick them up.

That is SOOO cute. What a clever idea. I'm not so clever, I just take the whole cage outside ... LOL

Tish, I do take the cages outside, but when I have to transport only one of 15 birds, it is easier to use this method than lug a big cage. I only do it because they are so tame and slower than budgies. I would not attempt it with budgies as they are out like a flash on any tiny opening.
