My last pair had 2 bubs but both died unfortunately. I loved watching them. The bubs are so cute when you open the box their heads start weaving - reckon they always seem to be hungry!

You know I read that there is a high death rate in finch/canary type birds. I BELIEVE that is it from e-coli passed from parents to bubs via beak and beak whiping on dirty perches. There is a vitamin enriched antibiotic you can give them in the water so they get extra vits AND meds so if the mom passes in via beak, they wont die.

My breeder uses 4 in 1 in the water while bubs in the nest and has not lost another chick. I did the same with the norwich AFTER ALL 4 fifes from two different nests got sick at the 10 day mark. For sure they all would have died if I had not intervened. Now I didnt want to take a chanse with the norwich. So far so good. :) Pass, what do u do???

CBL,
I don't treat with healthy birds, but whenever I feel that something is off I treat with theraprim which is a very safe anti-biotic. I also do fecal smears for the babies every 5-6 days and treat according to what I find.
I'm not showing off but I have approx 90% survival rate with my birds. (yes I am showing off LOL)

And here are the Goulds:

Pass awesome!, but why are they green, lovely color?, but I thought they would be beige??? I saw one in the store the other day and it was beige or sandy brown color?. Gorgeous by the way.

Pass, who does the fecal smears? you or the vet? Is there a kit?

I basically do the same without the smears tho. I find if the birds are not gaping and or the crops not full, their is a problem, that is how I managed to save 5 or 7 sick birds. Do u clean the cage bottoms or perches daily? It seems I have to or something gets sick.

Hi CBL,
It depends on the mutation, some are green, others beige or light yellow and you can even find greyish blue ones or whites.

I do the fecal smears at home. I have a microscope and I know how to use it :). With practice you will no longer need any help and can figure out what you're seing instantly. I am able to identify cocci, Protozoa (giardia, cochlosoma, trichomonas), worm eggs, AGY (megabacteria), yeast infections etc.... And then i treat to what I see.

I don't clean perches daily and cage bottoms only every 3-4 days. However my cages have grids above the bottom and the birds cannot touch the cage floor..

Also, when treating a sick bird I have the habbit of moving him to a clean cage every day and disinfecting the one he was in. The next day he goes into the clean cage and the dirty one gets a cleaning.

Hi Cathy,
Yes those shiny beads are very unique :)

Pass that is so cool. I desparatly want a microscope and have asked my friend who has two degrees, one in biology and another honors degree in something else, cant remember, but he doesnt have it anymore. My brother in law had one but cant find it either. I wonder if I can get one on line used on ebay or kijiji? I should start looking.

I did take a Animal sciences course one time and I know I have slides and a small machine gadget to identify them, I just need the microscope. I will ask my inlaws agian. Thanks.

CBL,
Yes you could get one online. Only make sure it has a power source (lamp) and not just a mirror to illuminate the slides, and it has to be able to magnify to 400X.

Thanks Pass, great to know as I'm sure I have no clue as to what is needed. Now I will look and see what I can find. I actually have a friends micobiology book that shows EVERYTHING from blood to parasites, and anything u could think of, actual full color photos, now I just need the scope to see them lol
