Got home from work tonight later than usual and went to check the flock and let them out to play. Let the bubs out first. Sierra was snuggling in so I didn't notice right away but then saw his right eye was bulging out. I looked carefully and it is as if behind it is swollen and pushing the eyeball forward. It was too late to take him to the avian vet so I went and bought him a broad spectrum antibiotic in case there is infection and bathed the eye with saline solution before setting him up in his own cage. He seemed to like when I dropped the saline solution on his eye as he couldn't quite close it and it was probably a bit dry. I also gave him a couple of drops of the med and put more in his water dish. Will call the vet on Monday if there is not enough improvement. Any advice would be appreciated.

Took him to local avian vet after work who sent me to another vet in Bowmanville (about 45 mins away) as he said she would have the right equipment. She took Sierra right away and lanced whatever it was that was pushing the eye up and out. She also send the stuff for analysis and did another test as well. She said is was a severe sinus infection that had caused the problem. She also prepared me to see him saying he looked a bit axe murderish as he had bled a bit. The assistant gave him his med and eye drops and now I have to do it twice a day. The vet was glad I brought him right away as we may have saved his eye. He looks a mess but was eating on the way home. We'll see what a good night's sleep does for him. |

Dio sounds like you found the right vet, thank goodness. Keep the little one in my thoughts and you as well as I know you must be stressed. |

Dio well done, I was gonna say abcess or infection and that is exactly how my one parrolet bubs died. She was infected so fast and so bad I didnt even get a chanse to get her to a vet. At nite she was bad, I medicated and by morning she was on her way out. That is when I made the decision to by the expensive bottle of injectable drugs and inject birds intramuscularly myself at first sign of any illness. I has save the lives of 3 of the 4 canary babies. P.S. I believe the infection came from rubbing her beak on a dirty perch. Now I move the perches so they cannot poop on them from above and I replace them instead of washing them regularly. I think the dirt enters the nose via the cere or nostrils and the infection is ugly fast. Glad u had better luck than me. Good work! |

I'm glad the bub is ok , most of the time with budgies is a bit of seed , the silly birds inhale it and it causes an infection , Well done , |

Thanks everyone Sierra was fairly strong and was doing OK but when I got home today, I could see that the drugs (Baytril & Ciloxan) must really have done the trick. His eye is fully open and the cloudy patch has gotten smaller. I thought the eye would be useless. It may yet be impaired but the improvement is great. The vet called me yesterday morning to say the first test she ran is negative and left a message asking for me to call them with an update. She still has 2 more tests to come back. When I get chance I'll replay it and write down what the tests are. I just let the flock out and Sierra is pretty ticked that I won't let him play out yet. The only thing is he now hates for me to pick him up whereas before he would just let me and have a quick snuggle before he went to play. And his feathers are a fright. Still it's early days. |

Maryann, sorry about your parrotlet. I think if I'd even been another day, the outcome for Sierra would have been very different. |
