Welcome to JUICED - a general chat community that focuses on providing an enjoyable place to visit and participate in. JUICED was first established in early April as a closed community; meaning that registrations were only allowed for 24 hours once a month. The idea worked surprisingly well, though it tried up after a few months and we ultimately decided to open the community for good. After another few months and a unsuccessful merge, we're back, and this time, we're here to stay!

WEEKLY DEBATE
Posted Image DATE: 22 - 29 November 2009
Posted Image TOPIC: Underage Drinking

Posted Image ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Australia's underage drinkers consume more than 175 million drinks a year and feed $107 million directly into government coffers, according to a new report highlighting "alarming" rates of illegal alcohol consumption. Specialists from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre say their findings show "getting pissed" is still a firm priority for young Australians - but the money they spend on drinks is doing nothing to help curb the problem.

"We've shown teenage drinking is a big money spinner for the government," said Dr Christopher Doran, lead author of the study in the journal Addictive Behaviours. "There's vast amounts flowing in, especially from spending on spirits and pre-mixed drinks. But while the money pours in, it's not being used to actually take a good look at this and turn this problem around."

The study shows that 506,000 adolescents aged 12 to 17 drank about 175 million standard drinks in 2005, generating sales of $218 million.

From what was said in the first post that's a lot of money going to the government, for illegal activity. If they legalized underage drinking then it'd be even higher because more people probably would drink and they probably wouldn't be stealing bottles as often either.

Anyways. I understand why there's an age limit to legally drink. Drinking should be done responsibly (no driving or being completely intoxicated in public etc), and most kids can't handle that kind of responsability until they're at least 17 or 18. I'm not sure about other places in the world but in America I think 21 is too old an age.. 18 would be better for drinking and 16 would good for smoking.

Kids shouldn't be allowed to drink alcohol until they are 18 or over. At the age of 18 you have almost matured to the fullest anyway. You are at the end of the teenage years and you turn into a man/woman. You are no longer a girl/boy. Men and Women are able to take the alcohol consumption but kids aren't.

Their minds will be poisoned at such a young age and since at that age they are easily drawn to activities by adults, they'll very likely become alcohol addicts. I do feel as though it is the parents responsibility to NOT let kids drink until they turn 18, not the day before they turn 18, I mean the day they turn 18 or 21 if you are in America then you can drink. At that age you do understand the ups and downs of alcohol. At a young age kids just do whatever adults do and it does seem 'cool' if 5 men are in a group drinking alcohol (usually Beer) from the kids point of view. So the kids want to be cool as well by drinking beer.

Now the money is good short term for the Government but those kids are part of our future in this world. In my place where I live, there are a hell of a lot of red P platers out there now. The future is not tomorrow, the future is happening now. If half of our future is poisoned with the consumption of alcohol then the future is not going to look very bright for most of us.

Drinking is terrible. I am 16 and I don't drink. Never finished more than 1/4 of a beer bottle.

Even at the age of 18 it think that many people are still not mature to drink. To be MATURE to drink means when you understand that drinking is bad and the you shouldn't drink more than what is good for you.

I think the more they try and clamp down on underage drinking, the 'cooler' it will become in the kids eyes which means they will want to do it more.
It seems like the goverment will never win.
Personally, if young people drink one or two, then that is fine, but when they get smashed off their faces and then go do shit around the town and set fire to things and smash things up, that is when it gets out of control.

I occasionally have alcohol but not that often. It depends if you are drinking a lot of alcohol or a small amount and only occasionally. Usually the reason why most young people do it is because they are put under pressure by the friends.
