JUICED was first established in early April as a closed community; meaning that registrations were only allowed for 24 hours once a month. The idea worked surprisingly well, though it tried up after a few months and we ultimately decided to open the community for good. After another few months and a unsuccessful merge, we're back, and this time, we're here to stay! Tobacco is one of the most widely-used recreational drugs in the world; mainly in the form of cigarettes, but also in cigars and pipes, and in combination with cannabis and marijuana in 'joints'. Although most countries put age restrictions on its use, over a billion adults smoke tobacco legally every day, and supplying this demand is big business. As well as having serious health consequences for smokers themselves, the pollution of other people's atmospheres with cigarette smoke also makes this an environmental issue. A few good questions to structure your response around: Is it the proper role of government to legislate to protect citizens from the harmful effects of their own lifestyle decisions? Does tobacco advertising increase tobacco consumption? Do health warnings, however much of the cigarette packet they cover, reduce consumption? What would be the effects of banning smoking in all public places, or even completely? Reference: http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=16 |

Please, the fact that the government says weed is bad just makes people like me want to smoke it more. No matter what the government does people will essentially do whatever they want. Laws haven't ever stopped people from killing or stealing. It's just another restriction that is being overlooked by many. Personally I don't smoke cigarettes for personal reasons, but it still wouldn't stop me if the government said they were bad. If I like smoking why should I stop. That's how most of the world functions when it comes to smoking. The government can try and get people to stop, but in the end people will do what they want. Cigarettes are nasty, I might enjoy a nice cigar on a special occasion. I don't think it should be taken away from the people that do do it though. |

I think the people have the right of what they want to do to themselves. Government shouldn't intervene whatsoever. Next they'll start banning McDonald's (impossible though ;)) to protect the obese from getting heart disease and such. I think advertising increases consumption because it makes people aware of the product. Even though that's not really necessary as we have neighbors, relatives, friends, co-workers etc. who might be smoking them and we already have been aware. Heath warnings on boxes don't do anything. In my opinion, once the individual starts buying their own pack, they're already hooked and it is but impossible to stop cold turkey or even reduce consumption a little. Banning it won't cause a difference. If people want to smoke, they're going to smoke because it's addicting. For example, when you're drinking alcohol, you're buzzing it but want a little more and there's no more left, that's sort of the same effect as cigarettes. It's the anxiousness that comes along with it. |
