Alenyi liked her weyr, she had to admit. She'd heard complaints when the weyrlings moved out of the barracks, how one person's Weyr was too small, one too drafty, one this, one that, one the other, but she had only listened with half an ear. One or two of the other weyrlings might have wanted her to do something about their problems, and she didn't specifically care to get involved in the pettiness of whose weyr was the best. Especially since her weyr was clearly the best. The queens' weyrs nestled along the northern end of the bowl, tucked along the warmth of the Hatching grounds so that - even if there was still snow lingering out in the bowl - her weyr was warm and dry and toasty. It helped that she had a girl who came in every morning to lay the fire and tidy up the weyr, since Alenyi wasn't exactly the type to be motivated to clean up after herself. She had, over the past two Turns, acquired a handful of lovely gifts which she liked to display - jewelry boxes, a globe, a map of the High Reaches territory, and a couple of tapestries, all gifted to the Weyrwoman of High Reaches. Aside from the stupid heaping of responsibility, it was a pretty nice job. Once she had managed to specifically forbid T'bay from entering her Weyr - "You are not the Weyrleader yet!" "I am!" "Acting!" It had been one of their more vocal arguments. - she was quite comfy and cozy here. Now if only she could stop letting things nag at the back of her mind. Numbers numbers numbers, ever swimming, ever pestering her. Every time thread fell, she counted the remaining dragons like a miser hoarding his marks. There were far too few, and the numbers kept dwindling, and she was hard-pressed to find someone she trusted enough to do something about it. No one was going to murder T'bay in cold blood, she figured, but nothing short of that would change the Weyrleadership right away. Alenyi cast a forlorn look at where Osyeth napped in the midday sun on her ledge, peaceful, somnolent, only vaguely fettered by the worries that plagued her rider. Part of Alenyi wanted that queen to rise, and rise right now. It would settle this Weyrleader business, it would solidify her as the actual Weyrwoman and not just a little girl dressing up for the part, and it would give the people hope. And part of her dreaded the day it would happen. She didn't really know the bronzeriders, aside from those with whom she had Impressed, and they still struck her as little boys. Well, she needed one of those little boys if she was going to make things work. [rspeak]Are you awake, my love?[/rspeak] [dspeak=#CFB52B]I am. Who do you need?[/dspeak] It amused Alenyi that her dragon knew her so well. Rarely, rarely had the goldrider summoned anyone to her weyr. In truth, excepting the cleaning girl, one or two meetings with the Headwoman, and the early fights she'd had with T'bay, no one had been allowed in this weyr. Certainly not a bronzerider. [rspeak]Can you ask F'rel to come here, please?[/rspeak] And she felt the queen withdraw slightly, felt her reaching out toward Inrath. In the interlude, Alenyi combed her hair, changed her overdress to something in blue-and-black - Very High Reachian. - and sat down sedately at a table in the outer weyr to wait, looking very pretty and important, if she did say so herself. [dspeak=#CFB52B]Inrath?[/dspeak] came the polite, almost shy-sounding question. [dspeak=#CFB52B]If you aren't otherwise engaged, Alenyi would very much like your rider to pay her a visit. She waits in our weyr.[/dspeak] |
