She would have T'bay's fingerbones for earrings, Alenyi thought viciously while she stomped up the steps into the galleries, seeking warmth and refuge at once. Who did he think he was, ordering her around. HER. The last queenrider on Pern. The Weyrwoman of High Reaches! [dspeak=#CFB52B]Unofficial Weyrwoman.[/dspeak] The thought nudged her gently but firmly, reminding Alenyi that, while Osyeth was yet unflown, the two of them were no more than the promise of more dragons, not the fulfillment. [rspeak]I don't care,[/rspeak] she returned petulantly, throwing herself down on one of the benches where she could overlook the sands. Here, everything had changed for her, everything had come true, and everything had been taken away all at once. Whatever she thought Impression might bring, whatever secret hopes she harbored about being a goldrider, she hadn't been prepared for the constant struggle with the bronzeriders, those who always thought they knew best. "She's the last queen," they reasoned, sometimes begged. T'bay was the only one who felt he could order her to keep Osyeth out of 'fall. And it had worked. In the end, Osyeth was still only a Turn old, and not yet confident enough in her own place in the world to tackle the Weyrleader's dragon. "Weyrleader," Alenyi mumbled with a snide, subdued laugh. "He hasn't flown any queen to get that title." [dspeak=#CFB52B]He's still the Weyrleader, isn't he?[/dspeak] [rspeak]Not forever. Not if I have any say in it.[/rspeak] [dspeak=#CFB52B]He might win...[/dspeak] [rspeak]He won't![/rspeak] And she felt Osyeth pull away a little, still timid about her own future, still a little nervous about her lofty position. She could feel a stirring in the back of her mind where the young gold reached out to her clutchmates, who were just now arriving from between where they would face their first threadfall. Osyeth was supportive, offering them praise and confidence. Alenyi was simmering, wishing she could assert her right to do as she chose. [dspeak=#CFB52B]They will need you when they're done.[/dspeak] [rspeak]They can heal themselves for all I care.[/rspeak] [dspeak=#CFB52B]But you do care.[/dspeak] [rspeak]I know.[/rspeak] And she sighed, knowing she would do what she could, even if she didn't really want to. Being a goldrider was not as fun as she had expected, dammit. |
