The Ministry of Magic is the highest employer of British magical folk in the country. Jobs vary widely, ranging from simply secretarial tasks to dangerous, highly secret roles. Obviously, the more important a role is, the more experienced the person filling it will be - a point you should bear in mind when applying for a job at the Ministry. This topic is designed to guide you through the set-up of the Ministry and the jobs within it.

The Minister for Magic is the highest position in magical Britain – they are essentially on the same level as the British Prime Minister, American President and that equivalent for other foreign countries. They are responsible for the running of the country, and although a lot is delegated to other departments the Minister is responsible for the most difficult and important decisions. As a senior member of the Wizengamot, the Minister has a large influence on laws, and in extreme circumstances can prevent a law being passed if the majority opinion of the public directly opposes that of the Wizengamot. Naturally, that doesn’t always happen, and in recent years corruption has been noted within the Minister’s office, particularly in Voldemort’s reign.

The Minister is voted into power by the general wizarding public. Candidates must be nominated by five members of the magical community who can provide evidence of their sound judgement, importance in the society and trustworthiness. Generally, they are Ministry officials or hold other jobs of power and respect in places like St. Mungo’s or Hogwarts. The candidates nominated are all put to the public vote, with the system running on a very simple ‘the most votes wins’ system. If the public demonstrates a dissatisfaction with the Minister, they may appeal to the Wizengamot to have him/her removed from power. In such cases, the Wizengamot will put forward a second public vote; if more than 75% of the nation votes against keeping the current Minister in power, they are removed from office. In recent years, this can be seen with Minister Cornelius Fudge. At current, the Minister for Magic is Kingsley Shackebolt.
