I am throwing a Halloween party for the younger two kids on the 25th. They are so excited and I really want to make this fun for them because soon things are going to get even tighter around here with their oldest brother moving back home. So the 25th is all about them, for them.

Anyways, they both were allowed to invite 5 friends from school. Along with a couple neighborhood kids , a couple friends from bowling league, and two of my great nieces, I will have a house full of kids, plus a few adults helping out. My daughter also invited a subtitute teacher (who also happens to be a father of one of her friends) and a mom from bowling league. So I am thinking I will have 10 adults and 18 kids..scary huh..hey but is is a halloween party..lol We have started the haunted house in the play room, Destiny has made tote bags for all the kids to decorate. I am collecting pumpkins here and there from different gardens so each of the kids might be able to carve a pumpkin. With the skate board ramp that Steven and I built and games and activities it should be fun.

I need some unique ideas for food to feed this crowd. The kids and I are planning this party mainly on things we have in the house and having to spend little out of pocket. We will be making Jack o'lantern pizzas, spider web pizzas, haunted cup cakes, snacks, veggies and maybe some apples with carmel dip. I am looking for a some fun ideas for snacks that fit the halloween theme , plus a unique punch recipe.

Also any fun ideas for games would be appreciated. The ages of the kids are 10-12 year olds along with a 2 and 5 year old.

SALTY BONES

1 tube of refrigerated breadstick dough (an 11-oz. tube makes 12 bones)

• Coarse salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unroll a tube of refrigerated breadstick dough and separate the rectangular pieces. Working with one piece at a time, stretch the dough to lengthen it a bit and then use kitchen scissors or a knife to cut a 11/2-inch slit in the center of each end.

Roll or shape the resulting 4 flaps of dough into knobs that look like the ends of a bone. Place the dough bones on an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them a few inches apart, and sprinkle on a little coarse salt. Bake the bones until they are light golden brown, about 12 minutes.

EERIE EYEBALLS

Makes 2.

Here's the good news about these edible peepers: They are made with three kinds of dried fruit and they're naturally sweet and nutritious.

• 2 dried apple rings

• 1 dried apricot

• 1 raisin

Directions

For each pair of eyes, gently flatten two dried apple rings with the palm of your hand. Carefully slice a dried apricot through the middle so that you end up with two circular halves. Press a half, sticky side down, onto the center of an apple ring, covering the hole.

For pupils, use kitchen scissors to cut a raisin in two, and press the halves, sticky side down, onto the apricots.

MELON BRAIN

Makes 1 (which is all you really need).

• 1 small, round seedless watermelon

Directions

Use a vegetable peeler to remove the entire green rind, exposing the inner white rind. Slice off the bottom of the melon to create a flat base that will keep it from rolling. With a toothpick, outline squiggly furrows that resemble the folded surface of a brain.

Finally, carve narrow channels along the tracings with a sharp paring knife (parents, do this yourself) to expose the pink fruit beneath the rind.

GHOST TREATS

Makes 1.

Looking for a treat that truly embodies the spirit of Halloween? Try serving some of these flavorful phantoms.

• 1 slice white bread

• Whipped cream cheese

• Currants

Directions

For each, toast a slice of white bread and then cut a ghost shape from it. You can do this freehand using a knife, or you can use either a ghost cookie cutter or a gingerbread-girl cookie cutter.

When the cutouts have cooled, spread on a generous coating of whipped cream cheese. For eyes and mouths, add currants.

CREEPY CRAWLY CUPCAKES

Makes 12.

When it comes to worming your way into little tricksters' good graces, this treat takes the cake.

• 12 chocolate-frosted chocolate cupcakes

• 1/2 cup white chocolate chips

• Red food coloring

• Blue food coloring

• Light corn syrup

• Hot water

• 1 cup chow mein noodles

•1/2 cup chocolate cookie wafer crumbs

Directions

Start with a dozen cupcakes. Then make the worm topping by melting white chocolate chips in a microwave for 1 minute and stirring them until smooth. Stir in 5 drops of red food coloring, 1 drop of blue food coloring, and 1 tablespoon each of light corn syrup and hot water.

Gently fold in chow mein noodles until they are evenly coated. Scoop the mixture onto waxed paper and use two forks to separate the noodles into individual worms or smaller clumps.

Allow about 20 minutes for the coating to set. Meanwhile, sprinkle the cupcakes with chocolate cookie crumbs and gently press them into the frosting. Top with the worms.

CINNAMON TOAST POPCORN

Ghee (clarified butter) is a better choice than conventional butter for popcorn. It has an intense buttery flavor, and because it has a low water content, it won't leave the popcorn soggy. Most grocers have jars of it in the ethnic foods aisle.

Makes 4 servings.

2 tablespoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

8 cups popped popcorn, hot

1/4 cup melted ghee

To make cinnamon sugar: Using mortar and pestle, food processor or blender, grind, process or pulse sugar, cinnamon and salt until reduced to fine powder. (Note: This will take about 1 minute with mortar and pestle or a few seconds with processor or blender.)

To assemble: Place hot popcorn in large bowl. Drizzle with melted ghee. Toss to coat evenly. While continuing to toss, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar until evenly coated.

KEY LIME PIE POPCORN

The tangy flavor in the popcorn comes from powdered citric acid, which resembles white sugar and is a common ingredient in candy. It's widely available at baking and craft stores.

Makes 4 servings.

8 cups popped popcorn, hot

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon citric acid powder

3/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

1 tablespoon butter

1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

2 drops lime flavoring oil (such as LorAnn Gourmet Flavoring oils)

1 drop green food coloring (optional)

To heat popcorn: Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Spread popcorn in even layer on rimmed baking sheet. Place in oven to keep warm.

To make salt mixture: Using mortar and pestle, food processor or blender, grind, process or pulse salt and citric acid until reduced to fine powder. (Note: This will take about 1 minute with mortar and pestle or a few seconds with processor or blender.) Set aside.

To make sugar mixture: In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine sugar, corn syrup, butter and cream of tartar. Heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils. Stop stirring. Continue cooking until mixture reaches 250 degrees on candy thermometer. Remove pan from heat.

To assemble: Remove popcorn from oven. When sugar mixture stops bubbling, stir in flavoring and food coloring. Immediately pour sugar mixture over popcorn, using wood spoon to gently mix it to coat evenly. Quickly sprinkle with salt mixture, tossing to coat evenly.

Glowing Hand of Doom Punch

disposable glove, not powdered
tonic water
dry ice
punch (cran-grape cocktail works great)
black light

Make the Punch
Rinse the glove with water. Fill the glove with tonic water. Hang it in the freezer to freeze it. I set mine on a box of ice cream to suspend it, held in place with a frozen pizza on the edge of the glove. Be careful not to mash the glove when the door closes or else the hand will be disfigured.

When the tonic water is frozen in the glove, set the glove in a large glass bowl or punch bowl. You should be able to get it to stand on its own without too much trouble, otherwise you can set it upright in a glass, placed inside the punchbowl. It isn't necessary to remove the hand from the glove. You can dribble a little red food coloring on the hand if you want it to appear bloody.

Pour your punch into the punchbowl. As the dry ice sublimates, it will carbonate your punch. Cran-grape cocktail makes a nice bloody-looking punch that tastes good carbonated. Orange-pineapple cocktail makes a nice orange Halloween punch. If you mix juice with tonic water then the punch itself will glow under a black light.

When it's time for your party, add dry ice to the punch. The dry ice will sink, so there isn't much risk of getting any into a cup when the punch is served. You can use regular ice if you want your drinks to be colder. Feel free to add more dry ice over time.

Black light (ultraviolet) will make the hand glow. Dry ice causes the bubbling. It's perfectly safe to drink the punch, but don't drink the pieces of dry ice (they are easy to avoid while serving the beverage).

:D

Igor-Ade

In a saucepan, mix 1-1/2 cups of apple juice and a 3-oz package of lime-flavored gelatin.

Cook and stir the mixture over low heat until the gelatin dissolves.

Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in another 1-1/2 cups of apple juice.

Refrigerate the gelatin mixture about 2 hours or until it is thickened.

Divide the mixture evenly among 6 glasses.

Slowly pour orange-flavored drink down the side of each glass. The orange drink will float on the green gelatin mixture.

If you use orange soda, you can add ice cream and make a foamy, fizzy Igor-float!

You can top the drink with whipped cream You can garnish the drink with gummy worms or other creatures, too.

Thanks for the ideas. The Glowing Hand of Doom Punch sounds like it would be a big hit. Also, Cinnamon Toast Popcorn sounds really good. and a good table filler. Thanks again.

How about shaping popcorn balls into ghosts?

Apple dunking would be a traditional game to play or you could do pin the hat on the witch!

I am also thinking about making the Melon Brain for the kitchen table center piece.

The kids have a plastic bowling set, that is mega size. I might try to turn the pins into ghosts and paint the plastic balls to look like eyeballs. That might be fun.

Last night I had them stuff our Frankenstien with news paper, he is going to be placed in a corner somewhere in the hallway.lol

And last night I also was checking the pumpkins I have aquired and one was already going soft. Well I couldn't let it go to waste so the kids had a bed time snack of fresh roasted pumpkin seeds.

Ok I admit it. I am excited about this party too, maybe more so than the kids.LOL
