Cabann - when Michael came home from the hospital there was a script he needed that the insurance would not cover. I could not afford the $368 per month ... I called the campany tht made the product - they agreed after I went thru our entire situation to go half if the insurance would pick up the other half. I called the insurance company daily and basicly nagged them into compliance. I asked them to record the call and play it for whomever needed to hear it. I explained the situation, I explained that I had a seriously ill premie, I explained that I was a stay at home mom with a sick baby and they were standing between him and this life-saving product. I expalined that I would call everyday... I was a stay at home mom and they had a toll free number ... and I would call everyday, two three times a day... eight nine ten times a day.. I would call and call and call ... until I ran their phone bill thru the roof and the operators out of their minds ... until it would just be cheaper to pay for the script... two days later ... they approved Michael's meds. Persistance is the key. Polite, but insistant ... never rude, or angry, or ugly ... but I would not go away... I would not be denied... |

Thanks Jolie for the tip. I found out that the device also isn't covered. I called the insurance company and so has the doctors office. Both getting the same answer..DENIED., not covered. This problem of Steven's is just a little one (not little in Steven's eyes), but not a medical emergency. As for the ADD, the doctor did push to get Steven tested asap so that is why were are getting it done Monday. His teacher is extremely compassionate about Steven's situation and I have reccomended that she speak with Steven's teacher from last year to find out what worked for her in dealing with his lack of concentration. She mentioned to me before that she had to be careful on Steven's seating placement. His teacher this year helped Steven reorganize his binder today and before he is allowed to leave for the day she will check his binder reminder and make sure he has the assignments written down and the books he needs in his back pack. When I mentioned to my oldest son that Steven was being tested for ADD on Monday, Zach's reply was "It's about time". |

I agree with Jolie about pestering the insurance company. This medication may not be for a life threatening problem, but it is most definitely necessary for Steven's self esteem and well being. Also call the drug manufacturer and see if they can give you a discounted price. Many drug manufacturers have programs like that. |

I didn't do much of anything today since I have hardly slept in the last few nights. However I will call the insurance company again on Monday when I am more coherent. Steven's weekly class report came home today and it wasn't good. He had a few missing assignments (which I was prepared for) but his behavior was marked "very unfocused". I am so glad he is getting tested on Monday. His teacher also sent a letter home for me to bring with us on Monday. His teacher is a nice lady and she is willing to work with Steven. She even knows how I feel about medicating him. It might help since I have known her and her husband a long time. Her first year of teaching, Dustin was in her class. And when Zach was in 8th grade he had her husband for a higher math class. When Zach moved onto high school so did her husband and both of the older boys had him for trig and calculus. |
