OK these past couple days I have been back and forth to the doctors for the kids. Steven's lack of memory and concentration is what brought this about. He was tested for B12 deficiency and something else which both came back fine. So then today we go back to talk to the doctor about the results, get flu shots for them and help on another issue Steven was having. That issue can be controled with a nasal spray. I go to the pharmacy too turn in the script and find out that the doctor needs to verify that the insurance will cover it. I come home call the doctor, call the insurance, call the doctor again. I just found out that this script isn't covered by the insurance. So I'm thinking, ok no problem. I call the pharmacy and asked how much the script is..well for a month of this nasal spray, it will run over $130. Like I can afford that. I call the doctor back and he is gone for the day. I am hoping there is something else that is covered that will help Steven. Then for his lack of memory and concentration he has an appt. next wednesday with his doctor and an appt. next Friday at a different office to be tested for ADD. Now I need to find transportation again for those.

I need to do something. Yesterday he couldn't complete his homework because he forgot which page to do out of the book. Today he can't finish two things because he forgot how to do one page and he also forgot to bring his social studies book home. The worksheet is a starter graph for his report and I am not sure how it suppose to be labeled. Steven keeps shooting my ideas down. He is feeling bad and is in tears and I am frustrated.

I'll tell you I am at my wits end. My 20 year old laid some pretty stressful news on me this morning, I can't get Dustin to get it together and now this with Steven. I am shaking because I am so upset. I am so tired of things not working out!!!!!!

Oh yeah and Destiny couldn't get her flu shot today because she has a cold. So that is another trip.

Take a deep breath!

Notify his teacher about Steven's current problems. Perhaps she/he'll have an idea on how to help him until you know what's going on.

There are herbs that help boost memory. I'll do some research on it as I can't remember off the top of my head.

Call the doctor tomorrow and find out if they can get you samples of the nasal spray, or perhaps they can give you the name of the manufacturer. Lots of drug companies have programs where you can get meds at a big discount. Have you checked at Wal Mart? I know Wal Mart and Kroger has that $4 plan...maybe they would cover this med.

Things DO work out, although not always as fast as we'd like or in the way that we'd like. I sure wish there was something I could do to help.

A couple things I found:

Ginger is another herb which defends the neurons of the brain to improve memory. Cinnamon is a brain activity booster; simply smelling it enhances cognitive functions and lifts the mood.

Steven's appt to be tested for ADD has been switched and now is on Monday. Which is good I guess, since when we see his doctor on Wednesday maybe we will be able to get a treatment plan set up as I do not want to medicate him with meds. His behavior is fine it is his concentration and memory that needs work. I am going to be doing some research myself. Thanks Paula for the info.

Zach's problem has been worked out for the time being, I had to step in since it might have affected his college year. And Dustin, well I am just about ready to ring his neck. His emotional state at times makes it hard for me to set him straight. This morning I put my foot down with him and he didn't like it all that much.

Anyways tomorrow is another day. Maybe a better one!!!!

I'll be speaking with her tomorrow, because this homework situation is getting out of hand. His doctor has already spoke with her that is why were are going to the ADD testing next. As I was telling you on the phone Paula, this doctor is great with the kids. He speaks to them like adults. Steven loves him since he is a sports medicine doctor (also a family doctor) and has treated a couple basketball players. He is straight and to the point. Shoot even today I even recieved a lecture on my behalf. He didn't like that I said if Steven's is diagnosed as being ADD that I wouldn't want to medicate him. It will just take more disipline on Steven's part and hopefully a natural alternative might help a bit. But like I said, once we have a name for this problem then his teacher and I can come up with a game plan.

There is probably something besides the nasal spray that would work for Stephen. His meds are sounding as expensive as mine. Did you ask the pharmacist if there was an alternative that you could use? Or have the doctor call the insurance company and tell them that there isn't a substitute and they will cover it. It's a PIA for the doctor but if this is the correct med then the insurance company needs a big nudge to pay for it.

Don't assume that herbs will help. They often have side effects and you have no way of knowing how much or how little to give to get results. Let the doctor guide you. Memory is far more than just a few neurons not connecting. And this could be more than just memory loss. I am always skeptical of ADD diagnosis but if the drugs help then at least you can give them a try. And do give them a try. The worst that can happen is his memory doesn't improve. You might also do some research on line with an ADD chat room to see if his symptoms are similar to other children. That will give you some guidence.

Hang in there. Things always change.

I have found a few herbal products that have worked on other ADD kids. Ginko Biloba, Brahmi. Gotu Kola and a few others but those three sound like the best alternatives. I am going to do some more research on each one.

As for that prescription, well there is one other alternative. It isn't a med it is a device. From what the doctor said it can work but doesn't have the positive results like the nasal spray. So now they are checking into seeing if it is covered by the insurance. I hope they can find something that will work. Steven has been feeling down about all his struggles. I know if we can get this problem under control he will start feeling better about himself.
