I talked to Jolie.....

I talked to Jolie just a few minutes ago--She and all of her family are fine.

She said they have been without power since about 12:30 today.

Some damage to the porch of her house-- and she lost her pecan tree. I don't think she was too happy about losing her pecan tree. They will be able to know more maybe tomorrow when it's daylight.

She says that Baton Rouge got more damage than ever before from any hurricane--including Andrew, Katrina or Rita, because Gustav had longer periods of higher sustained winds.

730,000 people without power... She says it may be awhile before she gets to check back in.

She says it's still raining there...

She said pray for the workers who are going to be trying to restore power. They've got a big job ahead of them.... and the humidity is going to be awful.

I plan on checking in on her often-- and will update the thread when I have new info.

If someone wants to copy this post over at BBS for her friends there, you have my permission to do so.

Thanks for the update. I feel sorry for her losing her pecan tree. They take a long time to grow and bear nuts. And the nuts are worth a small fortune. But at least she's alive and alright. I hope she gets her power back soon.

Got a voice mail from Jolie this morning. She says that some of her friends are in danger of flooding, so they will be doing sandbagging in hopes of protecting their homes.

She also said they can't find milk, gas, batteries, bread or ice.

I know we can't help her with the gas or ice problem-- but we could do some care packages with other items. I'm going shopping this evening and will send out a care package tomorrow morning containing bread, powdered milk, batteries and some other non perishable type things. If anyone else wants to do a package-- and you don't already have her mailing addy-- send me a PM and I'll provide the info you need.

I have a bag of powdered milk and a few can of evaporated milk that I can send out on Monday. Do you know what size batteries she needs?

If they are experiencing flooding then the mail is probably not running. Keep in mind that it takes a minimum of 72 hours before any help begins to arrive and in their case it's going to take longer because of the flooding. Send packages but understand that they may not arrive before the local stores open up again.

You may want to wait until Saturday and check in before you send anything out. Her situation could change dramatically in a day or two. And believe me, everyone is sending food and supplies to these people. I have been through a hurricane or two and I know that the Red Cross is doing what they can to get help.

I am not sure how out in the outskirts Jolie is living but wait until Saturday. If the flooding has receeded then the stores will be opening and supplies will be getting in. If the area is still flooded, your packages may be sitting at the post office for a long time before she can get them.

Jolie isn't very far out of town. I'm glad to hear they made it through fairly unscatched. We're still getting rain and wind here, how about you Tina?

It rained all night last night, and all day today up until about an hour ago. The sun finally came out for a little bit, but it's getting cloudy again. I hope the rain holds off for a while. The ground here is just saturated, and there's nowhere for it to go.
