I'm wondering what people are paying in other states for groceries, compared to Ca. The cost of living here is outrageous. Products have gotten so expensive lately, and some items (like rice) are hard to find. Milk is about $3.00 a galloon and that is for fat free, store brand. The last eggs I purchased 5 dozen at $9.89. Meat prices are so jacked that I have been making do with other option. Store produce is out of my budget but I do buy at farmers markets (can't wait for my garden to start producing). Boxed or can foods I only buy with coupons and if it is on sale. How are prices your way? |

Milk is $3.98 at the local grocer, $3.68 at Walmart supercenter, and occasionally one of the Shell service stations runs a special of 2 gal jugs of milk for $5.99. Eggs are $1.67 a dozen on sale...regular price is about $2 a dozen. I bought 5 dz a few weeks ago for $8.64 but that was a special ad price. There was one store that sold med eggs for 99 cents a month ago. The problem with that deal was that they were really small eggs in a med size carton. Eggs don't last long in my house. When I cook scrambled eggs... I have to cook 10 or 12 to feed the family. We only have eggs a couple of times a week now due to the price of eggs. I used to be able to get most canned goods for 39 cents a can at savalot. Now they are 49 or 59 cents for most items. I can still get a cheap brand of mac & cheese 3 boxes for a dollar... but it's just not as good as Kraft... so I usually buy the cheap stuff, and add a little melted velveeta cheese to it. Cereals are outrageous. I can't find ANY kind of cereal for under $2 a box, and those kinds my kids won't even eat. I usually pay $2.50 or more for something they actually like. We have deer meat in the freezer. I buy other meats only when they are on sale, and I get plenty of it when it is, because good sales are becoming farther and farther apart. My kids are tired of deer meat and pork tenderloin. That was the last meat that I found a good deal on. The local grocer had the whole pork tenderloin for $1.69 per lb. I bought three of them. I would have bought more, but that was all I could work into the budget at the time. Usually it's $2.79 or more per lb. I'm making a call to the meat processing place when my stimulus check is deposited tomorrow to see if they have a box deal or something... because I'm tired of grocery store prices. We also have a garden, and are praying that we have lots of stuff from it. There's a man at our church who has a produce stand... and I'm waiting to see how much things are when they start coming in from the farmers. Hopefully I can get some good deals there and get the things I haven't been able to plant. |

Rice isn't hard to find here, yet... The last time I was in dollar general they still had 2 lb bags for a dollar each. |

We go through a lot of eggs here too. When I purchased my last 5 dozen, that was the first time I had seen it under $10. I also quit buying box cereals. Even with coupons it is still too expensive. Luckily the kids eat breakfast at school every morning on school days. That helps out. As for the rice. I can still find the small bags but since we go through so much of it I always purchase the larger bags. The last few times I have gone to the store, the shelves seemed stripped of the big bags. Whats up with that? When I finally get my stimulas check I am going to stock up. I wish it would hurry up, However, according to the irs website I still have a few more weeks to go. :reaction Edited by Cabann, May 8 2008, 01:00 PM.

I am paying about $4 a gallon for milk. Even Sam's is not that cheap right now. And I paid almost $2 for a dozen brown eggs (yes, I am one of the few people who eat brown eggs). Bread is almost $3 a loaf. And I can't find a second day store around here. The last time I did a "little" shopping I spent almost $60 and I had 3 bags of groceries. It is really unbelievable how much groceries are costing. And I am a single person and I don't buy much meat. I know it has to do with the price of gas. I wish Bush would get some balls and take crude off the commodities market. That's what's causing all of this. |

Milk actually went back down here at the commissary. ($1.96/gallon for skim) At WalMArt the cheapest is almost $4. Bread has gone up about .25 and eggs have gone up almost $1/dozen! I'm glad we don't eat that many eggs while Kevin is gone. We eat so much fresh fruit I'm buying it at Sam's until all the farmer's markets and my tiny garden gets going. |

Usually someone is running a special on milk, so I can most times get it for about $2.50/gallon. I have noticed produce going up a bit and bread too. I haven't been looking for any wheat or rice lately, but I hear they are quite scarce here. My best friend was looking for some the other day and couldn't find any. She makes her own bread and uses the wheat everday. She's quite irritated that this stockpiling panic has set in and people that don't/won't use the wheat are hoarding it. Eggs are about $1.87/dz. Despite that, we are able to stock up on lots of cereal and canned and boxed products. We always have really great sales here. In fact, I'm printing a bunch of coupons for one sale right now. |
