Mom Is Near Death

Posted by: Bob_Wilkin

Mom has been in the hospital since Thanksgiving. She was doing badly for a time. I prayed that she might hold on until after Zane’s funeral, which was Tuesday, December 2, and better yet, till Dec 20-28 when Sharon and I would be in So Cal for speaking and visiting Mom.

I received calls from my sister Pam and my nephew Bob on Monday and Tuesday, first saying she was failing, then saying she rallied and was doing great. Mom did great on Wednesday and Thursday. Then yesterday around noon Pam called to say Mom had taken a turn for the worst.

Pam and my nephew Bob rushed to the hospital and Mom had her eyes open, but could not talk. I was able to get on an evening flight, arriving at the hospital at 10PM California time. Mom was still alive. It isn’t clear whether she knows we are there or not. She occasionally appears to focus on us. She will squeeze our hands if we hold her hand. Those things may be mere reflexes or she may be aware. We are talking with her.

Mom is still hanging on this morning. I write this from her room.

This is very hard for me. First Zane. Now Mom. She could rally, but the the doctors don’t think so. This is a reminder of the fall of Adam and Eve. Death reigns now. But not for long.

About 3 weeks ago when I called Mom and she said she’d read my latest newsletter article, “Some Essentials of Our Savior.” She said, “Is it really that simple?” “Yes, it’s that simple. Anyone who simply believes in Jesus has eternal life.” She then said, “I believe in Jesus. But I don’t believe all those other things.” (She didn’t explain further.) I responded, “Well, if you believe in Him for your eternal destiny, then you are guaranteed to go to heaven.” She then said something like I think I’m going to heaven or I believe I’m going to heaven.

I don’t know if Mom is born again or not. What she said is not quite that she is believing in Jesus for eternal life. Yet she might have meant that. That was the first time in her life I ever heard her say that she ever said, “I believe in Jesus.” And while she had told me before that she was going to heaven, she always said the reason was because she was a good person and all good people go to heaven. Yet this time she said nothing about her good works, only about believing in Jesus.

We would appreciate your prayers.

Dear Bob you are in my prayers. I have had consecutive losses in my own life 8 years ago. It is a lonely place (even for a believer). I thank God we have a refuge in the Lord- but we need each others love and prayers. May God hold you close to His Heart and may His angels surround you and His Spirit comfort your heart. I will pray for your mother as well. God bless you brother.

Dear Bob,

I just Re-read what your mom said to you when speaking with you a few weeks ago. The words that really jumped out to me that she said were these….
“Is it really that simple?”
For her to say those words means that she did understand how simple it was or she wouldn’t have said those words. Whatever else she meant, she did recognize how simple it was to have eternal life. I would hold on to those words as encouragement from Lord. He is so good to answer our prayers.
