Linux rules, OS X drools!

Also, it's not too hard to blow the doors off of a bloated, memory hogging, virus prone, piece of S whose original version was made around 20 years ago and of which every version has been backwards compatible with previous versions.

The problem with Linux (aside from the fact that there is no one Linux; it's a sea of Linices) is that it's so patchy and unpolished.

That might not sound like much, but it's important. As crappy as Windows may be, there is at least some vision and direction behind its design. The very best open source software tends to be a shoddy copy of existing closed source software or something small and with a well defined niche like Vim.

As a consumer OS, Linux is great if you've got a ton of time and you like to tinker with things. If you actually want to get work done and not spend all your time monkeying around with your system, even Windows beats it.

I have to disagree. People who use boxed Linux (such as Red Hat flavors) don't have to monkey with it because it works straight out of the box.

Red Hat works great... if you want to use OpenOffice and Firefox.

Even with RPMs, it can be a bit of an inconsistent pain in the ass if you want to use third party apps.

To each his own, I guess. When I used Linux before (Don't remember what flavor but it had a similar GUI to Windows) I enjoyed it, other than having to go to the command line to get root so I could monkey with some settings.

Either you're joking or I think you just proved my point.

Both Gnome and KDE are half-hearted clones of Windows - which goes back to my other point. The Open Source community can do a decent enough job of copying commercial software (and even that is mostly done by commercial entities for one reason or another), but you aren't likely to see revolutionary leaps like Apple's Exposé or Microsoft's ribbons (as in Office, not IE) or even something as simple as consistent UI standards come out of the Open Source community because the bazar model is not conducive to those sorts of things.

Of course, as you said, to each his own.... but (other than arguing for argument's sake) I really don't get why you'd be so gung ho about Linux when you don't even know what distro you used and you don't currently use it for whatever reason.

I just like it as an OS better than windows, that's all. Not trying to argue.
