the aforementioned "hub" is my recommendation, but most people are daunted by installing the dc++ software for some reason.

when are people usually on the hub? I'm on there every now and then, but no one ever seems to be chatting when I get on.

no one chats on the hub anymore. there has been little chat since stryker took over.

it's primarily for adam and drew related file sharing now. every great once in awhile, mandee will lead a charge into the hub when everyone seems to be posting simultaneously on the loveline companion. that's just about the only exception now.

also: all your loveline links are belong to us.

I was daunted by the dc++ software and didn't install it. It won't mess up my computer will it? If not, count me in!

if you can follow the tutorial, you should at least be able to establish a "passive" connection and DL from "active" members.

the software itself uses little resources (memory - processor) compared to most file sharing software.

I'm always a little thrown by people having so much trouble getting connected to the hub.

There must be some assumptions that we're taking for granted that never occur to them, or they're just not trying very hard.

Maybe they don't know how to set up their firewall?

Ah yes - I forgot about that; that would definitely do it.

ok, i might be able to help by cutting out some of the work.

open windows explorer (right click on start and choose "explore"), expand your C: drive and create a folder under program files (highlight "program files", click "file" in upper left corner and choose "new" -> "folder"). name it DC++.
it should appear like this: C:\program files\DC++

download and save this file: BCDC++

unzip it to C:\program files\DC++ (the folder you just created) via winzip or winrar. after doing this, you should see files within the folder of C:\program files\dc++.

open up the dc++ folder, and find the dc++ application/.exe icon. right click on it, choose "send to" -> "desktop - create shortcut".

minimize windows explorer, and double click the new desktop shortcut. close out the text file that opens, and type a screen name in the appropriate field of the dialogue box. boom. you should be in. i have pre set the settings to a "passive" connection.

if you know how to deal with your firewall, and how to fill in your IP address, you can switch from "passive" to "active" in the settings which will enable you to download from active and passive users. as passive, you can only take from active users, but that's ok, because the users with all the good stuff have active connections set up. if you can go active, bully for you.

your downloads should go into a folder that should be automatically created. the address will be C:\incoming. incomplete files will go to: C:\incomplete. feel free to change\redirect these locations if you want to. if these folders aren't automatically created, look within C:\program files\bcdc++ to see if your downloads are landing somewhere within a sub folder.

i'm curious to see if this works. if you try and have success, let me/us know.

I'll admit, my tutorial is out of date and a bit too wordy. Maybe I should update it a bit...
