Paying for access to Loveline; Why I think that is wrong

I have to agree with the Stryker hate. I would never pay to listen to him. He killed Loveline.
I think that the show could have survived without Adam (although it would not have been as good) but Stryker makes my skin crawl.

i would pay a drifter to do significant damage to stryker's vocal chords.

(lol - and that's my way of minimizing how i feel for the forum's sake.)

I think they should just put ads on lovelineshow.com and pay for it that way. I'm sure they've thought of it but getting out there to look for advertisers for the site would probably be more of a hassle than raping the fan/listener. I also am angry about that.

I am also thrown by the image of a girl with a stamp tramp on her back . It just seems so anti-loveline.
Well everyone now and then a tramp with a stamp on her back calls in. My guess is that those are the type of listeners they try to appeal to.

Only if they keep the paid version an option. No way do I want ads. $5 a month is a small fee to get on-demand, commercial free loveline. If you really don't want to pay, why not just listen to the live stream?

The thing that sucks the most about making people pay for podcasts is that that makes it a pain in the ass for someone to try the thing before they buy. Sure - it's just the price of a venti frappuccino for a whole month and that breaks down to about 25 cents an episode but even that is kind of a lot to ask someone to pay if they don't know what they're getting. Fans might go from the radio to the podcast but anything is enough of a barrier to entry to make it much harder to build the audience online.

Ditto for the listeners if they've been getting the same for free elsewhere.

Also, there are plenty of people who are cheap enough that even pocket change is too much - not to mention the teenagers who might want to listen but who don't have a credit card.

Ad support kind of sucks too although if they could work out the economics and have a free podcast with commercials (especially ones targeted to the listener) that'd be better.

I think the model I like the most for something like this or Adam's podcast is a voluntary donation. Given enough listeners (like Adam's show and possibly Loveline) a small percentage donating (/ paying a voluntary subscription) 5-10$/month or whatever they feel is appropriate could add up to hundreds of thousands or even millions without the burden of advertisers or complex / annoying fee collection systems.

The problem with ads on podcasts is that they won't get the same revenue for downloaders. Companies know good and well that most people will fast forward through the ads and won't listen to them. TV networks don't get to sell advertising based on the amount of people who TiVo, so I don't think the model will work on radio.

Hence the subscription (or better voluntary subscription) model.

Ads don't have to be so bad though. I've inadvertently heard a live read or two in Adam's morning show and they were good enough that it actually took a few beats before I realized they were ads.

Also podcasters could very easily insert targeted ads into their feeds or on their sites. Ads suck but they're not as bad if they are at least semi-relevant.

Still though - ads and mandatory subscriptions both suck.

So what would the ads be for, porn sites or something?

"Hey, this is Adam Carolla, and when I want to literally-LITERALLY try tugging my penis off my lower body, I go to (name of porn site).com. It's got everything, midgets, fat people, horses, even fat midgets riding horses! And when I say "riding".... Whether you're living in your parent's basement or in a crappy one bedroom apartment in Van Nuys, this site is guaranteed to get you off! (name of porn site).com!"

Sorry if this is a repeat post, but here's a list of stations/times for streaming loveline:

I have to weigh in and also say I'm not a fan of the pay per show model. I don't want to commit to a year. I want people to make money, but $45 is steep.
