from Loveline Archive: "For a couple of years, I have had sporadic contact with Westwood One about doing something to put this show on a more stable footing. They have mostly ignored me, until recently, when an executive there started making strange and contradictory statements before issuing a nonsensical ultimatum." In the atmosphere that content holders exist in now there is no way to do this with a good outcome. Part of our ability to access and share them depends on everyone to "be cool" and don't go waiving it in the face of the owners. Why they're so worried about a bunch of hours of audio that they'll never monetize is beyond me--they actually probably aren't worried about it, but if you're out there in the open sharing it and pointing it out you will get slapped down. |

It really is ironic that if they did it right, they could probably be making money off of those old episodes rather than just blowing money on lawyers to shut those sites down. |

oh--it's incredibly stupid. It's the same mentality the buries The Adam Carola Project. Dr. Katz was kept off the air for ages and they never put it on DVD until last year. I don't really get the rationale for warehousing content and not cashing in on it. they could release it in batches with some interviews from A & D about key moments...I just don't get it

It's annoying that they could capitalize on all of that stuff with almost no investment (save for a bit of editing and transcoding, but they could probably even get someone to handle that). There are actually people out there who like your product and want to buy it. Rather than selling it, you force them to do without or to obtain it through illegal means that don't benefit you in the slightest. |

WW1/KROQ would do much better to use their time to try to get Loveline the MTV show on DVD, and include deleted scenes such as Drew's argument with Jon Favreau over whether a mentally ill caller should take medication. |

sorry for the self-indulgent self quote, but I just figured out an argument for them. There's roughly 10 years of Adam and Drew Loveline in the vaults (and on the internet) so to speak. They're still producing new Loveline. Which product would you prefer? I don't think the new Loveline could ever compete with the old--they aren't even in the same ballpark. New Loveline today exists on the network that was built with the Adam and Drew team--there's no way Stryker & Drew get syndicated to 100 plus markets. The content owners probably know this and want your only source of Loveline to be from 10 pm- 12 AM five nights a week. It's an incredibly naive perspective, but that's why we'll never see the A & D vaults opened. Westwood One will get hard up for cash in 10 years and Rhino will buy the content and do a nice production of some classic shows--but it'll be ages. |
