Dr. Drew Live... as a podcast.

Hey Folks, I recently wrote Dr. Drew a myspace message saying the following:

Hey Drew

I really miss Dr. Drew Live.

Have you ever thought of bringing it back as a podcast the way Carolla does his show now?

You could maybe get some sponsors to foot the bill and link it to drdrew.com now that it's yours again and make Anderson part of it (I really thought he and his amazing music bumpers were an integral part of the show).

Loveline is great, but there's a void there for those of us who are (well) over 25, I need my fix of Tuesdays with Bobby, Dr. Gail Saltz, Charles Sophy, and the rest of the assorted cast of semi-regular characters who challenged my way of thinking on many a subject matter. It was also a show where you could rap about many things that don't fit into regular loveline fare, I didn't always agree with you, but it sure gave me a lot to think about.

The internet is the content delivery system of the future, it might behoove you to dip your feet in those waters before everyone else jumps in at once and DDL may be exactly the vehicle to do it in.

Give it some thought.

Thanks

What yo you folks think?
Good Idea?
Bad Idea?

People have talked about this idea before and in addition to the problem of who would host it/pay for the bandwidth, Drew already burns a bunch of calories in the day with Loveline and his TV shows and practicing medicine. Even if he started doing a podcast, I doubt it would be as frequent as Loveline or Dr. Drew Live was.

I would totally love a Dr. Drew Live podcast. I think the problem with that idea is the business model - how do people actually make enough money to make it worthwhile? Adam isn't actually making money, according to what he said when he guested Loveline - and the hosting cost is killing him....

drew doesn't do anything for free. he isn't nearly as altruistic as adam.

i think adam and drew together could pull off a podcast people would pay for, but for me, they absolutely need the dumb loveline callers to make it work. the skype crap adam does with incoming calls from sycophants is lame.

there IS a business model for this, guest Jason Calacanis explained it in fairly plain english to Adam on the ACP.

I get the feeling that Adam doesn't want to do it as Calacanis suggested for two reasons:
a) He doesn't want sponsors to meddle with his content and
b) he's still under contract with CBS and I think that doesn't allow him to get paid for the podcast until the year ends.

But Drew I don't think has EITHER of those problems, it's just a matter of some nerd braniacs (I'm just an ASPIRING nerd) throwing in with Drew and start getting it on.

P.S. All this PAYING FOR IT talk won't work, radio is free and a podcast MUST compete with that like it or not to reach even a semi-mass audience, some of us die-hards might pay for it but the casual listener just plain WONT even if it's inexpensive.

Drew also probably has a noncompete clause in his contract that may preclude him from doing something like a podcast, on the other hand, he did do his Internet show on Drdrew.com in the late 90's/2000, so who knows. I think he would be loathe to spend $50k/month on bandwidth as Adam is doing, though. If he were to do something like this, I'm guessing he would possibly get more downloads of it than Adam does of his podcast.

If Drew did this, I would chip in a couple bucks every month to make it worth Drew's time. I'm guessing I'm in the minority, though.

As I said before, a podcast can GET SPONSORS to foot the bill for all the bandwidth and such.

I'm certain that more than a few sponsors would just love to hop on board with Drew on a project like this because he's already famous and with drdrew.com as a fairly regular pit stop for Drew's fans the podcast would premiere to a waiting audience without much need for initial promotion.

Most people will not pay for a podcast, that's why satellite radio is in the tank, look, youtube is free, radio is free, TV is free for the most part, and again, podcasts must compete with that to be a viable means of mass entertainment and or information, so get sponsors involved just not to the point where they take over the show because that'll just kill the whole thing.

P.S. Adam said it's costing him about 10 grand a month for the bandwidth, but it's still a lot of money.

Forget it though

One of the greatest things about Adam Carolla is his willingness to bite the bullet for a while and burn some calories gratis for a possible payday in the future, Adam will find a way to make his podcast profitable and even though he's hinted that his leanings are for fans to pay for it, I think in the end he'll decide to keep it free, believe me an audience the size of his will not go long without having something pimped out to them, it's only natural and there's nothing wrong with that.

On the other hand Drew did loveline for free at the beginning for a good couple of years as I understand it, so who knows, It's all just wishful thinking I guess.

DrDrew did Loveline for 10 years without getting paid. He asked for a paycheck because he had a family to support. I know I've said this before but I pay for the Loveline memebership. It's not a lot to me...only $50 a year. If Drew Live were to come back and there was a membership like Loveline...I'd pay for without thinking about it. That's just my opinion...and it's not just your wishful thinking.

The real question is, what will Dr. Drew have to become in order to make money off a podcast?
