Appearance

Face: Hugh has murky grey eyes with a prominent Roman nose in the center of his aging face. Terrible yellowed ‘British’ teeth dwell in his mouth behind thin lips. The lines on his face show an age much older than he holds.
Hair: What was originally a light brown color has now faded to mostly grey. It is kept short and neat, and his face is kept clean shaven.
Figure: Hugh stands just short of six feet. He is thin to the point of being lanky, having very little muscular quality, though he is decently strong.
Attire: He is almost always seen in robes, either black, stone grey, or Slytherin green. While keeping shop at the Hudson’s establishment, he can be found in black robes with their crest prominent. At his bar, he’ll wear any of the three colors. When forced into a ‘muggle’ situation, he tends toward suits and other more dressy attire.
Other: Hugh has the initials of his friends who fell in the second war (on both sides) tattooed on the inside of his right arm. On his left are family members he has watched die through his life. Over his heart he has a portrait of his former wife.

Personality

To most of the world, Hugh is quiet and aloof. The only place that this is not the case is when he is most comfortable behind his bar. There, he is a commiserate ear to the hurting, an encourager of peace, and a friendly voice to those persecuted. To the few who know him well, Hugh is a broken spirit, constantly trapped behind his years of grief. To those outspokenly for either of the two factions, Hugh is a violently vocal detractor, wondering why they are still fighting a war that he thinks should have ended years ago.

Best Qualities: strong listener, slow to judge, no longer violent
Worst Qualities: utterly warped by depression, incredibly bitter
Likes: quiet, alcohol, cigarettes, his few living friends
Dislikes: the war, violence, stupid people

Goals

-live to see the wizarding world at peace
-reconcile what is left of his family
-convince his son to let him back into his life

Fears

-death of those around him
-war in general
-loving anyone in any of the ways you can love

History

Family History
The Hudsons are a very old, very rich clan that has been powerful in England for over a century. There is a seemingly genetic fetish towards Spanish females on the Hudson line, as Hugh is the seventh male in four generations to marry a woman for Spain. To maintain a front of respectability the Hudsons have run a shop on Knockturn Alley since 1919 to maintain a front of respectability and stop questions about where their money comes from.

Individual History

Hugh was born at his grandparents’ farmhouse just south of London to Robert and Isabella Hudson. His very early childhood was typical of the Pureblood elite: he lived in a large manner, wanted for nothing, and learned to scorn those unworthy of him. He commanded the house elves, learned to be a proper gentleman of society, and sneered at muggles, all while coming from a family who considered themselves too good to get involved with the likes of Voldemort during the first war, which came to an end when Hugh was eight years old.

Two winters later, when Hugh was ten and just before Christmas, the fortunes of the family began a slow and irreversible decline that had nothing to do with money, power, or any of the other factors that usually cause a fall from grace. Instead, the Hudson were played by a string of violent deaths in the family just as the wizarding world was starting to feel safe. That year, when everyone was gathered at the farmhouse to celebrate Christmas, Hugh led an expedition of four children into the nearby woods. Hugh was in charge and was forced to watch as his cousins Cristobal Hudson and Jareth Auvenshine were carried off by wolves and then eaten. He was barely able to escape with his cousin Jude and his life.

The shock of this threw the family into bickering and disarray. Christobal’s parents let it be known that they blamed Hugh entirely for their son’s death, even though he himself was only a child. This put a great strain on Hugh’s mother, the de facto peacemaker of an always argumentative family, and she eventually died less than a week before Hugh began studying at Hogwarts. The official cause of death was an unexplained disease, but most of the family, especially Hugh, blame stress. He and Christobal’s branch of the family still don’t speak to this day.

Things calmed down for a while until the summer when Hugh was 16, between his fifth and sixth years. He was in London hanging out with his two favorite uncles, having lunch at a small café on Diagon Alley. A couple of former Death Eaters found out that both of his uncles were gay and challenged them to a duel. During the duel, the opposing second cursed both uncles while they were unaware, making family members number four and five that Hugh was forced to watch die. He then had to wait for the two men to leave and take the two bodies back for burial, which was more than he had taken back of his two cousins. Just after the following school term started, Hugh’s girlfriend of two years attempted suicide by wandering out into the Black Lake at Hogwarts, hoping to either be eaten by the giant squid or drown.

The combination of all of these factors drove Hugh into a deep depression. When he graduated Hogwarts, his family arranged a politically convenient marriage to the oldest daughter of a prominent Spanish magic family, Maria Garcia. Much to everyone’s surprise, the two feel deeply in love and were a perfect couple, even causing Hugh to stop the drinking he had started at a young age, straighten out his life, and even smile sometimes. When they were 21 years old, she gave birth to their only child, a son named William and the little family was complete.

Then heartbreak struck Hugh one more time. When William was three years old, Voldemort returned, and Hugh was forced to watch as old friends died on both sides of the war while what was left of his family once again stood moodily on the sidelines. Then, just months before the Dark Lord fell, things really hit home. Hugh came home from work to find William crying on the front porch. He went inside and immediately saw his wife’s heavily wounded, nearly bloodless body lying dead on the living room floor. Next to her, a message was written on the wall in blood: This is what happens to those who refuse to pick a side-Bellatrix Lestrange

Hugh became a complete wreck, Maria’s parents took William away to raise him, and life was never the same. Hugh ran the family shop, drank a lot, and plotted ways to see his son more than the week in December and two weeks in July that he was legally allowed. When the new war started, Hugh opened up a bar for people who did not want to take part so that they would have a place to feel welcome.
No more blood on my hands, out of my family, or in my dreams. No more.
