Tomb Raider Two - The Dagger of Xian TR2 was my first experience of the Tomb Raider franchise - purchased after I exhausted all ten levels of a shareware game entitled Nitemare 3D. I was excited by the images on the box and eager to try out another game that boasted a three-dimensional environment with a capacity for great exploration. But to my dismay, my PC back then was unable to support the game. So like any budding enthusiast I bought a new PC simply to afford me the luxury of playing this fantastic game! After a few hours spent trying to figure out the controls on the PC I was still happy just exploring TR2's manor. When I felt I had enough basic control skills I loaded the game and watched as a short FMV played out lara's deliverance to the Great Wall of China. To a novice, a simple jump from one platform to another can be quite a "Hit and miss" and I failed to make the very first required jump for quite some time - instead falling into a presipice and being nobbled by one of two tigers that appear during this level's initial area. The feat before me was to ascend to a gatehouse on the actual Great Wall but it took me several hours to accomplish due to my gaming ineptitude at that time. I soon found myself progressing, however, because most of the early movements that Lara was capable of were required early on in the game - jumping, pushing/pulling objects, swimming, grabbing and opening doors plus the inevitable use of weapons - were forcibly learned pretty much from this first level...including shimmying and speed runs. The ensuing levels were simply awesome and aesthetically, very pleasing. From China, Lara visits the ever-colourful Venice, then onto such places as Tibet, an offshore oil rig, and an underwater shipwreck before finally returning to Croft Manor which is a level (end level), in itself. The purpose of her mission? To retrieve a covetted and powerful dagger from ancient times and to race her arch enemy, Marco Bartolli, to it's final resting place..a temple that may look appetising but is wrought with a great many traps and dangers. When finally Lara retrieves the dagger from Bartolli (who has since executed it's powers and changed into something quite different!), Lara returns to Croft Manor. The only trouble is, she hears intruders and burglary alarms....the final battle is not yet won. Lo 17/12/2008 |

Oh boy, I vividly remember having the same feeling when I started playing TR2, I had such a hard time climbing ledges that I though the gatehouse was the end of the level. Loved reading the review, Lo, you sure know how to make them entertaining!
