ZoneAlarm Firewall (Free Version); Problems with ZoneAlarm

This isn't a major issue but is an annoying issue, especially when I'm trying to do work on the internet. I downloaded the ZoneAlarm firewall on the recommendation of the old PC Nightmares board, but since it installed, the firewall crashes almost every hour on the hour. If I'm viewing multiple pages on the net, that number drops fast. It really is annoying to be reading a news site then click on a link only to discover the firewall's crashed. Can anyone help?

If you have your standard Windows firewall running you shouldn't really need ZoneAlarm.

I had it on my PC for a time and it was horrendous. It slowed everything down and seemed to conflict with other programmes. I took my PC tower in to my brother's place of work one Christmas when visiting and he had me on speaker phone almost immediately, demanding to know what possessed me to install it before taking it and all it's components off.

I do a lot of web browsing but find my Windows firewall is ample combined with my AVG. I run Be Clean too now and again too and haven't had any problems so you might want to consider uninstalling it/disabling it (but ask around first as I don't want to be responsible for an even worse problem!)

Try Googling something like "Is my ZoneAlarm firewall causing conflicts?". I betcha it will throw back a few forums hosting such questions and answers ;)

(Welcome by the way, good to see you!) :wve:

I did just what you suggested about Googling ZoneAlarm Lo, and the list it threw back (to the search term 'Problems with ZoneAlarm') was so huge I only had to read two of its articles before getting the general picture. People who were dissatisfied with the program and had attempted to uninstall it only to discover it wouldn't go away/caused even more problems. Needless to say that after reading those horror stories, I decided that I wasn't going to chance it and am going to get rid of the little menace as soon as I can.

What really made me laugh though was what the uninstall program started with. It titled itself 'ZoneAlarm Survey' and had a nice little paragraph which read 'Optional Survey: Are you uninstalling permanently? Please let us know why. Your input helps us improve our products. Thank you!' What a riot! Luckily, when I ran the uninstall program, it disabled ZoneAlarm before getting rid of it.

Thanks for the warm welcome by the way.

LOL!! Yes, it tends to root itself in lots of hidey holes - something I strongly object to with such programmes (I guess there's no such thing as a free lunch)! Glad you managed to rid yourself of it but make sure your Windows (or default) firewall is up and running to compensate! :tmb:

It's ok I've already removed it, thanks anyway. At least I was able to remove it using add/remove programs (even if it did decide to behave like HAL in 2001: A Space Odessey and try to convince me not to remove it. ) Thanks for all the help and advice :tmb:

I've heard that ZoneAlarm can be a pain, and definitely not for the average user with all those pop-up notifications. :(

If it helps, I'm using ESET at the moment, which is by far the best anti virus/firewall I've come across. But as long as you're not doing anything too dodgy :p , Windows Firewall should be just fine. ;)
