DETROIT - Viagra and pronography are not staples on the government's food stamp list. But authorities say a Detroit liquor store supplied them during a series of illegal deals.

Federal prosecutors filed fraud charges this week against three people who worked at Jefferson's Liquor Palace.

The alleged scheme worked this way: Food stamp recipients would get cash from the store in exchange for swiping larger amounts off their electronic cards. The store would then be reimbursed by the U.S. Agriculture Department
And in some transactions, the government says the store provided informants Viagra, liquor and pron in exchange for swiping about $2,000 off food stamp cards.

The government says fraud at the store topped $130,000 over 2 1/2 years. The store is closed.

I am really surprised that the government accepts food stamps from a liquor store at all.
I know they do not accept them at supermarkets for cigarettes and beer etc.
Too bad when a system gets so abused .
And no doubt this a tip of the iceberg too.

Agreed, it's a terrible abuse of a system presumably designed to provide those on welfare with food, not woodbines and bourbon

I always said, on a similar note, that any absentee parent who is paying child support should NEVER be expected to hand over raw cash which can be inappropriately spent. And I have known women use such money to buy a new pair of shoes for themselves or some such luxury

They [The provider paying CS] should be able to purchase food stamps or tokens designed to be used as part or full payment for groceries excluding alcohol and cigarettes which makes it harder for an errant parent to squander the cash. That said though, it's hardly ideal since most superstores like Wallmart sell everything from clothes to electrical goods aside from just groceries so how would that work?

I don't know what the answer is on that score but something ought to be done to ensure the money is getting to the children and I really mean it when I say I have known women go out on the lash using money given for the welfare of their children. Despicable.

No wonder so few men have any faith in the system.
