Hi, I recently tried to burn a video onto a blank dvd rw disc in Ulead VideoStudio 9 and when it came time for the program to burn the data to the disc, it couldn't and specified that there was a problem with the drive. After saving an iso image of the data I was trying to burn, I restarted the computer and tried to burn the iso to the disc using Sonic Digital Media Home when I got this message shown in the advanced information of the errors message: Sense: 03 ASC: 73 ASCQ: 03 (Command 00) ------------------------------------------------------- px.dll: 4.0.36.500 pxafs.dll: 4.0.36.500 pxdrv.dll: 1.2.9.0 pxmas.dll: 4.0.36.500 pxsfs.dll: 4.0.36.500 pxwave.dll: 4.0.36.500 pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3 My computer uses a Sony Optiarc AD-5540A and runs Windows XP Home Edition. I've already tried to update the drivers and uninstall then reinstall the drive but this has not corrected the issue. Can anyone suggest what I can do to remedy this problem? I can offer general troubleshooting tips to help narrow down where the problem is. Check that the DVD+RW is not defective. Make sure you can successfully erase it and write data to it on another system if you have one available. Check what Windows thinks the drive is. In My Computer, for example, I think it displays something like "DVD-RW Drive". If it displays something like "DVD-R Drive", it doesn't think the drive is capable of burning DVD-RW discs. Check that your drive is not defective. Make sure you can read program CDs etc. Then try a CD-RW, and make sure you can erase one and write data to it. You can test this right from My Computer, where you should have the option to erase a CD-RW when you click the drive. Then try reading a DVD+RW that already has data on it. Then try writing to a DVD+RW. Windows XP does not natively support DVD+-RW discs. It appears you have already tried two different programs to burn a DVD, and that didn't work. What about past history. Has it worked before and now has stopped working, or is this the first time you tried it? Is this the first time using a +RW disc? That's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck. |

I've done what you have suggested Ruum Taedor, and that has revealed another problem. When I put an audio cd and a cd-rom in the drive, the drive behaved itself. When I put a CD-RW in the drive the drive could read data that was already stored on the drive but wouldn't write to the drive, although it did recognise that the disc was blank. I tried again using both Sonic DigitalMedia and windows itself to burn data to the CD-RW, on both occasions the programs said they had successfully written to the disc but when I checked it turned out they hadn't. When I put in a DVD+RW that had data written on it, the drive said that it had nought bytes on the disc and had no free space. The drive has burned +RW discs in the past and the media I was using are brand new, I tried using more than one disc thinking it was probably the media but since it didn't record at all I'm thinking the fault is with my pc. |

I'm glad you took the time to go through my suggested steps, Xaander. It does help to narrow down where the problem might lie. So, your drive doesn't seem to be writing anything, does it. I've been thinking about your problem during my day, and I can't think of any software fix for you. Based on your feedback, it seems like a hardware failure to me. You'll have to take your computer in and have the drive tested and probably replaced. If you find the problem is something else, I'd be curious to know. |

I tried to record to a CD-RW again for no reason other than desperation and amazingly, it worked! To make sure I wasn't seeing things, I put the disc in another machine, it still worked, I erased the disc and then went to burn another file on, it did so without any errors whatsoever. However, it is still playing up with regards to DVD+RW discs (when I put the CD-RW in, it recognised there was space but even though it was a brand new DVD+RW disc, the computer thinks it has nothing written to it and no space available.) P.S. Thanks for the help so far, it is much appreciated. |
