Source: Daily Telegraph New cases of swine flu could top more than 100,000 a day by the end of August, ministers have warned, as they admitted they can no longer contain the spread of the virus. By Kate Devlin, Medical Correspondent Published: 7:00AM BST 03 Jul 2009 Patients with suspected symptoms will now be told to stay at home and telephone their family doctor for a diagnosis, as part of a major step change in the handling of the pandemic, in an effort to limit the spread of the infection. Anti-viral drugs will also no longer be given as a precaution to people who may have come in contact with the infection. Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, said that an almost doubling of cases over the past seven days had prompted the Government to move to the third and final "treatment" stage of dealing with the outbreak. A specially convened meeting of Cobra, the Government's emergencies committee, was warned that cases could reach 100,000 a day by late August. Story continues at: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/swine-flu/5723627/Cases-of-swine-flu-could-top-100000-a-day-by-August.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I guess we all expected it but I was never worried nor surprised by the rise in cases. It's called the "domino" or the "pyramid" effect. When only one or two persons contracts a highly contagious disease or virus then natually, it's spread will be fairly contained and dependant on who they come into close contact with. But once others are infected they spread it on to their close contacts and so forth and it naturally increases drastically - fans out globally - in a very short time like any virus. They are stock-pilng anti-viral medicines but as to who will pay for the multi-million Pound medicines is still between two authorities. Many who have died so far have had underlying health problems such as Diabetes and Asthma. BA are already reducing flight prices - I had an e-mail today but whether this is a result of loss of revenue to attract customers back I don't know but if it is, I certainly predicted it and said as much to my mother several weeks ago. BTW, why have professionals even stopped spelling the word Flu correctly? It's short for Influenza and as such (as an abbreiviation), it should be written 'Flu (Just thought I'd pedantically point that out) Lo |

Hi Lo. Just a few quick comments on your post as I am off on my cruise today. B A has allways been Profit driven and have tried all the tricks in the book as well as running Cartels to keep artificial prices up and also there have been in the past LEGAL CASES in with Virgin Air Lines. Also I think that a Media quote of 100,000 cases a week of swine flu is an inflated figure and blown up out of all reasonable expectations. As you have said people that have died from it have had other major sicknesses and ailments. Dolphin. |

It does say 100,000 CASES a week not 100,000 deaths so obviously the more cases thare are the more vulnerable peiople will catch it so there will undoubtedly be more deaths. I think the best one can do to avoid it is to , if possible , avoid crowds and stay as much as possible out of populated , enclosed areas. Having said that , get on with life and hope that no-one you know or care for contracts the flu which at the very least is extremely uncomfortable. |

Have great fun on your travels, Dolphin! DREME - very true. But this won't put me off my Canada trip. I can see it now - everyone on the plane wearing their drop-down oxygen masks by defauld ![]() Get down to your local Pound shop - they are selling three tubes of sterile hand gel for a quid. It evaporates as an alcohol-based gel and will help you to disinfect yourself after you've been rummaging through the Oxfam bargain rails
