Not long been back from the krankenhaus. Thank God I had not anticipated my Flexible Sigmoidoscopy being painful. Point of fact I was assured it would not be painful and I got through my barium enema without too much discomfort and thought this would be tamer...but I was wrong.

NEVER AGAIN. I cannot recall being in such agony, even when I fell down a flight of stairs and broke my collar bone as a child.

I have quite a good threshold but I am not kidding you, I was crying out within three minutes and STILL more air went in. I felt like I was giving birth to Vanessa Feltz :ha:

I had tears rolling down my face after ten minutes, I swear I thought I was going to pass out and wished I had of. Even afterwards I could hardly walk and I could not sit down for long in the cafeteria.

Why the pain? Because I already have Diverticular problems (open pockets that extend out of the colon wall) and they discovered more of them during the polyp removal. So all that enforced air was becoming trapped in these pockets and all the way home in the car I was having spasms in my abdomen that you wouldn't believe possible

They did not even offer me sedation nor pain relief. The odd tap on the shoulder was supposed to put me at ease when I was just beside myself. My diverticulae are still painful now as I type but the bulk of the air they could not remove is working it's way down from just below the diaphram to my lower bowel - and the contractions are simply evil.

Never again will I ever agree to such a procedure unless they sedate me, it is cruel to put someone through that, presuming they knew I had diverticular disease, that is beyond cruel, that's torture!!

I thought the worst part in truth would be the prep meds (last time for the Barium Enima I was given Picolax in the post). This time I had Klean-Prep. It's three large sachet's of unpleasant-tasting powder that have to be mixed with three litres of water and after 6pm yesterday I had to get through two litres of this foul mixture (that's eight mugs), a mug each 15 minutes and I had not eaten for two days prior to the procedure at 3pm save one oxo cube drink and a slice of plain white bread. That stuff can't be gulped down bravely either, it tastes like nothing on earth!

Anyway, I have to wait for the biopsy now. Urgh, I was trembling like an autumnal leaf when they wheeled me out of there. Thank GOD I never had to go through childbirth and never will

My God, Lo. Very good thing you didn't know exactly what awaited you. You've faced it, you've done it, the (majority of the) agony is over. You did your best to prepare yourself according to their instructions, so there should be no need to repeat it. Very admirable of you, Lo.

Of course, that's nothing compared to my hardship. I forgot my dessert today!

Seems that it is a similliar procedure to a colonoscopy.
Checked it out in wikipedia.
Had 2 colonoscopies myself and both times they found nothing amiss.
Oh boy I have # 3 coming up this year.
I always think the prep is the worst part.
And then there is the "break wind" bit at the end.
Oh and you get a bit of toast at the end too.

Partially yes,but I still knew what was going on.
Even got to watch the monitor for most of the time.
With no commercial breaks.
And oh the toast was the bestest I had ever tasted.
And the coffee was just like nectar of the Gods.
Was about 10-15 minutes in recovery.
P.S.
Talking about colonoscopies and ads just scroll down .LOL

Colonoscopy is similar to but not the same as sigmoidoscopy, the difference being related to which parts of the colon each can examine. While colonoscopy allows an examination of the entire colon (measuring four to five feet in length), sigmoidoscopy allows doctors to view only the final two feet of the colon.

I am very happy that yours was not that far sis as you would not have been able to stand it. I still think it stinks that you had to endure all that pain when it was uncalled for you to go thru that. Like I said in the other thread - I am totally put to sleep each time I go thru the procedure as the doctors don't think my heart would take my going thru all that pain and are afraid that I would go into an attack.
