Hey there, I'm Stephen. I'm a third year college student studying theatre and computer science. I'm currently spending a semester in New York City doing a technical theatre internship. I have fun listening to music (all sorts) and messing around on the internet. I've also started to have fun cooking, though I've just made somewhat simple stuff so far (i've just started learning about the different spices). |

Thanks, all! I'll have to see about those recipes. So far I've mainly been making soups, where I don't actually measure anything I put in.. I'm originally from Michigan. |

Stephen, I adore soups. We have a Friday vegetable market here with affordable fare so often I grab a handful of veggies and return home to make a nice, healthy, veggie-packed broth. If cucumbers are going cheap I make cucumber soup and I have included my own recipe on the recipe section! I have a juicer which helps to marmalise everything! But much like yourself, I tend to judge my ingredients as opposed to weighing or measuring things out so it is actually quite hard for me to write a step by step recipe. It doesn't quite work if you say 'a measure of salt and a handful of flour'

Ooh, nice. In NYC, there are a lot of bodegas and stores, so it's pretty easy to get fresh fruits and vegetables. Well, relatively fresh, as I doubt they're local. When I'm older, I wouldn't mind having a garden where I could grow my own stuff. I'd definitely like to have an apple tree. I have some relatives who have an apple orchard, and once a year we have a big family gathering where we get together and pick apples. The ones with holes or that have fallen on the ground are washed and turned into apple cider. Lately, I've been taking a bunch of apples to school and turning them into applesauce. Next year, I should go and make a couple pies... |

You could probably grow herbs and such in your accommodation, Stephen but the fact is, would you actually use them in every day cooking? I use dry herbs rather than fresh ones! Good call about home-grown veg though. I ought to be growing some myself in truth! It would sure cut down on my need to mow the lawn, lol

All my life I have been around gardens. When I was a little girl one of my biggest pleasure was to go into my indian grandmother's huge garden and pick some green beans or sweet peas when real small and eat them right there. She never uses pesticides but for some reason the natural stuff she used to keep the bugs away did a fantastic job as she had the most beautiful harvest from her gardens. I remember her going pick about 10 or so canteloups. Then she would sit on the ground with all her grandkids as well as my 2 uncles who was the same age as my brother and me sitting in a semi circle in front of her waiting for her to cut into them. The juice would run down her arms as she sliced into them and they were so ripe and so delicious. The smell was as sweet as they tasted. Awww the good old days. My mother had gardens as well. I always had a garden too but in the last few years since my auto accident in 2003, I used huge pots that I put on steps that my ex had built for me to make it easy to plants and weed. There is no room here for a big garden but I have a patio. So the last time I went to Louisiana I got the huge planting pots from the shed and took them here with me so I can grow some veggies. My ex don't do gardens so he had washed them and put them in the shed for me to have in case I wanted them here. So I am looking forward to fresh veggies this year. Sis I also use dry herbs in my cooking. But at one time I had gotten something called Chia-pets that you could still get in the USA, Stephen. They are decorative and the herbs that grow out of them is very good. All you need is a shelf with a little light to put them on. If you have flourecent lightening or can buy a small wall mounted flourecent light then you can grow fresh herb right in your place even if you only have a room. |
