I wasn't sleeping too well last night so I got up before 5am, stuck the kettle on and wandered onto the Eidos gaming forum. But what awaited me was utterly shocking Some complete idiot who has clearly taken umbrage, signed in with a copy-cat name, similar to that of a respected and helpful Level Editing member, and took it upon him/herself to post THE most heinous and profane rubbish regarding the respectable administrative staff - two folks who are happily married and run the site with the same fairness that I try to run mine with. The content is too bad to replicate, much less hint at. I saved a copy of the thread so I could pass it to one of the admins if requested, lest a mod delete it. Other than that, it won't be up for sharing to anyone else. The point in case is this. Anyone who runs or indeed assists with a website forum is setting themselves up for pain in the long run, potentially. Moderating or indeed administrating a forum can be both a blessing and a burden wholly dependant on how one runs it and the attitude of those who frequent it. It can take but one opinionated member to ruin years of work, as has been shown once before on our very first Whistle Stop Cafe when a so-called trusted member of staff wiped out the whole kit and caboodle. Were the membership deterred? Not in the slightest. I spent hours reconstructing our site with no back-up database and members flocked back. Thankfully. But I try to maintain a friendly forum here and have had rare cause to ban nor warn anyone. If I do it is usually a tame warning via PM or an outright ban without comment when it comes to so-called "spammers" who join only to further their warped agenda (product advertisement without prior permission and dodgy links to adult material). In the latter instance I have no choices available to me because if an innocent member clicks on a link from a new member, believing it to be harmless, they may find themselves in an illegal site that promotes peadophilia, for example. This very thing has happened to a select few friends of mine and ergo, it is VITAL that myself, Ruum or the moderators tackle these such threads immediately to spare members the injustice of innocently clicking on what transpires to be an exceptionally dodgy link that's wrapped in ribbons. I hope I run the site well and I hope people appreciate the "behind-the-scenes" work that my moderators and administrators go to in order to make the site safe. Like the proverbial duck in water, he seems to swim gracefully on the river whilst underneath his feet are paddling like mad ![]() It's a quiet site on the external but quite well-managed, busy and studious on the inside. Thanks for reading and let us hope nobody EVER comes here and attempts to wreck the reputations of decent people. If they do they will face the wrath of the High Priestess with her big wand thingamajig LOL (It's called a "staff" but I didn't want to be seen to be waving my moderators about in mid-air LOL)

Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as a spam bot. It was a disgruntled member who had an axe to grind with a couple of the moderators. This person stayed online posting filth until someone with authority was finally able to stop it. |

I noticed that Rum. I read some of the posts and they not seem real nice. Some people like to hide behind a computer and garner negative attention. In a twisted way it is self reinforcing. Other than getting rid of the offending posts and poster not a lot can be done. If the offending poster is nasty, he will simply reappear. Trust me, I know! |
