How do you mean he saved the state a trial? It doesn't specify whether he wounded himself fatally.

It just states he killed the pastor then the gun jammed so he pulled a knife on himself.

Well if he had died and this was your only source, then I'd imagine the narrative would have read that he had [equally] fatally wounded himself.
