I just bought a cheap boxed trilogy (DVD's) about Prison Breaks, one being that of the real "Papillon" AKA Henri Charrière, later made into a movie with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman.

Some say his claims of various escapes from the likes of Devil's Island have been widely exaggerated in his book. His final escape apparently went "Unnoticed" which was most unlikely although there was a war on by this time of course so other distractions may have caused his absence to go relatively unnoticed.

Some Wiki data:

There's a good one hour TV documentary about the guy who wrote it and several peoples examinations of his story. The general consensus was that the stories were probably all true but that they didn't all happen to Charrière. Pretty much what is said in the Wiki article.
I can't speak about the book but the movie is A WORK OF ART!!!! Great movie, excellent acting and writing.
Very scary and sad. Probably McQueen's best acting too.
Fast and bulbous!

Probably. It's been a year or two, I can't remember. It had interview footage of Charrière.
Fast and bulbous!
