I am not sure where this belongs but here will do.

SETI is the search for etraterrestial intellignce. Not UFO's but radio astronomy. Part of the problem is the sheer scale of the task, RF pollution and technical limitations ie. some signals may be below the self generated noise of a receiver etc..

The only way SETI will find an alien broadcast is to orbit a few sats.

Interesting find, Cimmee.

I don't know how Space tech has progressed in the recent decade but about ten years back they were running a documentary about sending out all these TV broadcasts.

They sent out episodes of "I Love Lucy", knowing that it would take fifty years to reach the nearest planet and a further fifty years for any message to be returned, depending on all of the obvious factors such as the technology elsewhere and whether or not some planets were inhabited by intelligent life.

I am constantly fascinated by Space and I am also of the firm belief that there just has to be life out there - not in terms of just bacteria where water is but intelligent life and possibly whole civilisations that are more developed than we are.

I also buy into the Roswell incident. Why would it be so proposterous a thought that material could have been recovered that defies the laws of [our] physics such as the "foil-like" material that, when scratched, had an ability to repair itself.

All we can work with are the basic elements that are available on Earth.

It's all open to ridicule because minds are largely closed. People need to think outside of the box and realise that something much greater and beyond our comprehension is going on out there.

I believe there was (or is) a "SETI at home" screensaver program that downloaded a batch of SETI data, processed it, sent the results back, then downloaded another batch. If extraterrestrial evidence was found in the batch your computer processed, you received some sort of credit, or something like that. Interesting stuff.

Lo,

The USAF dismissed UFO's with "Operation Blue-book".

If an alien signal were to be recieved it would be along the hydrogen wavelength ie 21cm. Interstellar dust attenuates other frequencies.

"The hydrogen line, 21 centimeter line or HI line refers to the spectral line created by changes in the energy state of neutral hydrogen and occurs at a frequency of 1420.40575 MHz, equivalent to a vacuum wavelength of around 21 cm. This line falls within the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is used extensively in astronomy, since it can penetrate dust clouds that are opaque to visible wavelengths. The radiation comprising the hydrogen line comes from the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the hydrogen 1s ground state.[1]

From what I was able to make of the block diagram of the Allen SETI observatory part of it is cryo cooled. This reduces the self noise of the receiving equipment.

I would love to see Arecibo used a little more for SETI but I am sure it's booked decades in advance.

Same with this one out in Arizona.. Very Large Array... aka VLA

SETI has not really advanced into the realm of "real science". If I didn't know any better the Allen array looks like a bad joke.

Is there intelligent life elsewhere? Possibly.

http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/SETI/drake_equation.html

The link is to something called the "Drake Equation". It is a way of estimating the number of intelligent species in the universe..

I don't want to start another debate, but it should be pointed out that one of Bluebook's primary goals was to disprove UFO sightings.
Fast and bulbous!
