Source: Daily Telegraph New cases of swine flu could top more than 100,000 a day by the end of August, ministers have warned, as they admitted they can no longer contain the spread of the virus. By Kate Devlin, Medical Correspondent Published: 7:00AM BST 03 Jul 2009 Patients with suspected symptoms will now be told to stay at home and telephone their family doctor for a diagnosis, as part of a major step change in the handling of the pandemic, in an effort to limit the spread of the infection. Anti-viral drugs will also no longer be given as a precaution to people who may have come in contact with the infection. Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, said that an almost doubling of cases over the past seven days had prompted the Government to move to the third and final "treatment" stage of dealing with the outbreak. A specially convened meeting of Cobra, the Government's emergencies committee, was warned that cases could reach 100,000 a day by late August. It's called the "domino" or the "pyramid" effect. When only one or two persons contracts a highly contagious disease or virus then natually, it's spread will be fairly contained and dependant on who they come into close contact with. But once others are infected they spread it on to their close contacts and so forth and it naturally increases drastically - fans out globally - in a very short time like any virus. They are stock-pilng anti-viral medicines but as to who will pay for the multi-million Pound medicines is still between two authorities. Many who have died so far have had underlying health problems such as Diabetes and Asthma. BA are already reducing flight prices - I had an e-mail today but whether this is a result of loss of revenue to attract customers back I don't know but if it is, I certainly predicted it and said as much to my mother several weeks ago. BTW, why have professionals even stopped spelling the word Flu correctly? It's short for Influenza and as such (as an abbreiviation), it should be written 'Flu (Just thought I'd pedantically point that out) Lo |
