Yes they were already searching with these machines that detect certain things emitted from the soil but the moors are so very vast that it's hard to cover the whole area properly. The couple were known, like most killers, to have certain trophies and in their case it was innocent looking photographs that Brady took of Hindley smiling and cuddling a dog...for example. The dog one was taken very close to one of the other victim's graves. So first they had to examine all the pictures and try to find the correct spot but that's like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack because without some sort of visual aid on the moors themselves (in the dog picture, Myra Hindley was sat on a large rock), each view looks much the same as another one - miles from anywhere with planes of thistle and moorland growth. After years in custody, I'd be surprised if Brady actually could find himself around anyway but who knows?
