Janet Redmond-Mercereau, a New York City public school teacher, apparently murdered her husband, FDNY Fire Marshal Doug Mercereau, while he was sleeping in their Oakwood home in December 2007. According to investigators, Doug was shot three times in the head with his own FDNY-issued gun, just feet away from where his young daughters slept in their bedrooms. Prosecutors said Janet was angry with her husband and wanted to cash in on his pension and life insurance. They say she attempted to cover up the crime by quickly washing her clothes after the incident and placing the weapon inside a dishwasher. "Following a careful and deliberative investigation, we excluded the possibility that anyone but Janet Redmond-Mercereau could have killed her husband Doug ," said District Attorney Daniel Donovan. "His murder was a cold and calculated execution." For her part, Janet has told authorities she had nothing to do with the murder, claiming she did not hear any gunshots because she was sleeping with earplugs. Those inside the courtroom say Janet appeared unemotional during the sentencing. Her attorney's claim she plans to appeal the court's decision. Janet faces sentencing June 25.
