CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- A pathologist has determined that the death of the third wife of former police Sgt. Drew Peterson was a homicide, James Glasgow, the state's attorney in Will County, said Thursday.

Investigators have said Drew Peterson is a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

"We have been investigating this as a murder since reopening the case in November of last year," Glasgow said in a written statement.

"We now have a scientific basis to formally and publicly classify it as such."

Suspicions surrounding the disappearance of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, prompted authorities to exhume the body of Kathleen Savio late last year.

Savio was found drowned in a bathtub in 2004, but her death was originally ruled an accident.

Certified forensic pathologist Larry Blum conducted the autopsy on Savio after Glasgow said additional information turned up during the investigation into Stacy Peterson's vanishing that raised questions about the death of Savio. Video Watch Savio's sister discuss her suspicions of Peterson »

The new autopsy results have left Stacy Peterson's loved ones with "an eerie feeling of dread," said Pam Bosco, a spokeswoman for her family.

"We realize that Kathleen and Stacy had one common denominator, and that's Drew Peterson," she told reporters Thursday evening in Bollingbrook, Illinois.

"I can't help but feel extreme sadness for Kathleen, because she did cry out so many times, but it seems like it fell on deaf ears. Now that this information comes out, we can only hope that we find the person that did this horrible thing to her," Bosco said.

(CNN) -- Drew Peterson pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.

The former police officer entered the plea in a Will County, Illinois, courtroom, said Charles Pelkie, a spokesman for the state's attorney in the county. Peterson remains in jail with bond set at $20 million, he said.

Investigators have named Peterson as a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. His third wife's death was originally deemed an accident, but after the case of the fourth wife sparked new questions, Savio's body was exhumed and a grand jury indicted Peterson this month on a charge of first-degree murder in her death.

On Monday, prosecutors asked that a new judge hear the case, according to CNN affiliate WGN-TV of Chicago, but the reasons for that request were not immediately clear.

After Stacy Peterson disappeared in October 2007, it was revealed that Savio had died in 2004 during a nasty divorce. Through his attorney, Drew Peterson has denied wrongdoing in either case. He has maintained that Stacy Peterson left him for another man.

His lawyer said the cases are not linked.

"They're two separate and distinct cases," Andrew Abood told CNN.

"We know in Kathleen's case we have an original autopsy that says accidental death," he added. "In Stacy's case, there has been a significant search for her and there is no proof that there has been any wrongdoing to her. So, under those circumstances, we believe that Drew is innocent of any allegations and that these charges are based upon hearsay and innuendo and rumor."

Outside the courtroom on Monday, relatives of Kathleen Savio expressed hope for justice to be done.

"We hope it's going to come out the right way," her father, Henry Savio, told reporters.

His daughter died just before finalization of the division of the marital assets, leaving Drew Peterson the sole beneficiary.

After authorities exhumed her body and conducted further tests, her death was ruled a "homicide staged to look like an accident."

Peterson resigned his job as a sergeant with the Bolingbrook, Illinois, police department shortly before the body was exhumed.

State's Attorney James Glasgow said during a bail reduction hearing Friday that Peterson tried to solicit a hit man for $25,000 to kill Kathleen Savio, press secretary Charles Pelkie said.

The hearing concluded with 12th Circuit Judge Carla J. Alessio-Policandriotes denying Peterson's request to reduce his $20 million bail.

The former Bolingbrook, Illinois sergeant has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder for Savio's death in 2004.

The couple was going through an acrimonious divorce when Savio was found dead in her bathtub with a gash to the back of her head.

His attorney dismissed the allegation that Peterson sought a hit man to kill Savio, saying it was one of many claims to come out of the hearing that he would disprove.

"He said a lot of things he can't substantiate," attorney Joel Brodsky said after the hearing. "Each time he fails to prove them, we'll be there with a motion to reduce bond."

Peterson has also been named a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Savio's death was originally deemed an accident, but after the Stacy Peterson case sparked new questions, Savio's body was exhumed. A grand jury indicted Peterson this month on a charge of first-degree murder in her death.

"So much of these 'new facts' have come to light in the last six months," Brodsky remarked. "People just seem to be having an amazing memory."

Members of Savio's family said they were not aware of the hitman allegations but were unsurprised by the news.

"After she first died, we were all convinced she was murdered," sister Susan Doman said. "I can't believe this day has come. ... It's a very bittersweet victory."

Doman said that she knew Savio had a $1 million life insurance policy and that she had removed Peterson as beneficiary before her death.

"I knew he was the beneficiary at one point," she said. "I don't know if he knew she had changed it."
