Cultural powerhouse American Idol is rising from the dead tonight after spending three years off the air. With new judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie and a new structure that, much like The Voice, only auditions singers with the talent to move on, this season is sure to be different. But will the show be able to find talent that measures up to earlier seasons? Take a walk down memory lane with these stand-out performances and, and decide for yourself.

Fantasia Barrino, "Summertime"

This Gershwin classic from Porgy and Bess was the perfect choice for Season 3 winner Fantasia's distinctive vocal tone and shining personality.

Taylor Hicks, "Takin' It to the Streets"

Season 5 was the ratings apex for American Idol, and Taylor Hicks was a huge part of that success. This Doobie Brothers song was the perfect choice for the silver-haired singer, letting him show off his massive charisma and delightful dance moves.

Bo Bice, "In a Dream"

It might be shocking to learn this in the age of Pitch Perfect, but singing a cappella is a huge risk. Bo Bice pulled it off with flying colors in this performance, about which Simon Cowell said, "You may have just put 34 musicians out of work."

Carrie Underwood, "Alone"

Country signer Carrie Underwood stepped out of her comfort zone with this cover of Heart's hit song. The performance is a perfect display of the intense vocal talent that led her to win the whole season.

Melinda Doolittle, "My Funny Valentine"

Former backup singer Melinda Doolittle is such a talented performer that her live performances often sound like you're listening to a professional recording. Her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is no exception.

Adam Lambert, "Tracks of My Tears"

Adam Lambert is best known for his impeccable pop-rock (He recently toured with Queen in Freddie Mercury's spot, if that says anything), but his understated, emotional performances like this one are what have stood out from his Idol career.

Katharine McPhee, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"

Singing from her knees alongside two box drummers, Katharine McPhee never looked cooler. KT Tunstall's hit was the perfect match for her and proved she was more than her clean-cut exterior.

Blake Lewis, "You Give Love a Bad Name"

This was one of the biggest risks ever taken on the American Idol stage. And whether you were swept up in Blake Lewis's beat-boxing or just confused (like Jon Bon Jovi, himself), it's undeniable that this song was something worth talking about.

Chris Daughtry, "I Walk the Line"

Daughtry's take on this Johnny Cash masterpiece was just different enough to suit the rock singer while still maintaining the essence of what makes the song so great. It's a perfect example of what put Daughtry among the most successful non-winners of any season.

David Cook, "Always Be My Baby"

Winner David Cook was a master of making the themes fit his talents, not the other way around. He made the Mariah Carey song completely fresh and new while staying true to his alternative-rock roots.

Kelly Clarkson, "Stuff Like That There"

Kelly Clarkson could be a Broadway powerhouse if this performance has anything to say about it. Although she's known mostly for her pop hits, her American Idol win proved that her talents go beyond the mainstream.
