For those of you who are familiar with the Swamp's suggestions when JTFTW went to radio, this is not new information. There have been a lot of questions recently because of some contradictory information that has been read elsewhere, so we wanted to re-list the most important of these. Please let us know if we can help you find the right station in your area, or if there is a question we can try to answer for you (we might have to go ask someone, but we'll try our best). Thanks to everyone who wants to make a difference...... MOST IMPORTANTLY - Any instructions/requests from Taylor or his management obviously supersede those suggested here. - IT IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO TARGET A SELECT GROUP OF RADIO STATIONS AND HAVE THE ENTIRE FAN BASE "BLITZ" THOSE SELECT STATIONS. Radio stations are well aware of these types of efforts, and they serve to do nothing but alienate a fan base, and worse, sometimes the artist, from that particular station. - NEVER REQUEST FROM A STATION THAT YOU CANNOT DIAL IN LOCALLY OR STREAM VIA THE INTERNET. If you cannot listen to that station, they do NOT care what you want them to play. They consider these requests false inflation, and a waste of their time. Particularly if it is done via the internet, your ISP address identifies the region from which you are e-mailing. - THERE IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN PERSISTENCE AND AGGRAVATION. Be sure you don't cross it. Limit your contact with each station to once a week. If they have a special promotion or a request hour, then twice in one week may sometimes be appropriate, but never more than twice. - DO NOT ENTER A BATTLE YOU CANNOT WIN. No fan has ever forced a station to play a song (at least that has been documented)..... If you meet with resistance or negativity, answer with kindness and charm. Simply make your request, thank them for their time, and move on. Never criticize another artist to radio personnel, even if you are met with criticism of Taylor. Along with those goes "know when to quit" ... it will become obvious early on if a station is not at all receptive to your requests. That is the time to move on to another station. - YOUR RADIO DIAL IS YOUR VOICE. A radio station garners advertising revenue (their life blood) based on the number of listeners. If they won't play Taylor, or are not nice to you, TURN THEM OFF...it is the BEST way to voice your dissatisfaction. Don't feel like it is necessary to tell them you are turning them off...JUST DO IT. - THANK AND SUPPORT THE STATIONS THAT PLAY TAYLOR. Be sure to say thanks if your request is played...or your station is "Taylor friendly" (one time is enough)....never underestimate the power of "thank you" or "I appreciate you". If you see the station out somewhere doing a remote broadcast, go up and say hi and thank them in person. MAKE AN IMPRESSION...A POSITIVE ONE. By simply saying thank you and not pushing for anything more, you have spoken volumes. - BE A VALUED LISTENER. Develop positive, long term relationships with the radio stations in your area. Support their charitable drives and special events. About once a month email or call them to comment or complement them on something they did or presented. Do not attach a Taylor request to it. Make it genuine—really look for something positive about the radio station. Let them know you care and are interested in more than just hearing Taylor—participate in the radio community. If they have a frequent listener's club, or a rating program, join it. Show them you ARE a valued listener. |
