THE VENUE:

According to actor Rex Smith "One of the most stunning features is the auditorium’s center dome, a replica of the one from the palace’s throne room (only twice the size). The “Pearl of Perfection” chandelier is held in the teeth of a great coiling dragon, which has five toes—each toe representing an evil spirit that must be vanquished. The elaborate proscenium arch that frames the stage features a myriad of Chinese design motifs, including bas-reliefs of the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace. The theatre’s constant residents are a pair of Fu Dogs, which have traditionally stood guard in front of China’s imperial palaces."

After 11 months of construction, The 5th celebrated its grand opening on September 24, 1926 and lived up to its promise as a magnificent showplace. Under the guidance of architect Robert C. Reamer and interior designer Gustav F. Liljestrom, the ornate interior was modeled after three of Imperial China’s architectural achievements: the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heavenly Peace, and the Summer Palace. The theatre was also considered a technical marvel at the time, thanks to its state-of-the-art sound, lighting and ventilation systems.

Posted Image

The original sign and marquee from 1926.

The attention to detail is incredible, from the intricate organ grilles graced by Ho-ho birds to the coffered ceilings and the balcony walls covered with orange blossoms, chrysanthemums and lotus flowers

Following the grand opening, The 5th served as a venue for vaudeville, then operated as a movie palace until the 1970s. Facing severe financial difficulties, The 5th was forced to close its doors in 1978. Possibilities for the site included a Chinese restaurant, a triplex movie theatre, an office building, and a shopping center.

Fortunately, 43 business leaders banded together in 1979 and underwrote a $2.6 million loan to save this extraordinary cultural treasure.

Several changes were made during the painstaking renovation: the orchestra pit and auditorium seating were rebuilt, the dressing rooms moved, and the technical systems updated. However, the furniture, fixtures and signage are original. Even the paint was carefully restored to its original luster.

June 16, 1980 marked the theatre’s rebirth and a new chapter in Seattle’s arts community. Now a historic landmark, The 5th continues to thrive with the assistance of many generous donors and volunteers.

Preceding Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California, the 5th Avenue Theatre "has been called the largest and most authentic example of traditional Chinese timber architecture and decoration outside of Asia."[2] In addition, its association with architect Robert Reamer, whose other notable works include the nationally known Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park, as well as many important buildings in the Art Deco style add to its significance.[9] The Fifth Avenue Theatre was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1978.[25]

The 5th Avenue Theatre is a landmark theatre located in Seattle, Washington, USA. It has hosted a variety of theatre productions and motion pictures since it opened in 1926. It is operated as a venue for nationally touring Broadway and original shows by the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association. The theatre, located at 1308 Fifth Avenue in the historic Skinner Building, has been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

The 2,130 seat theatre is the resident home to the 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company and employs over 600 actors, musicians, directors, choreographers, designers, technicians, stage hands, box office staff, and administrators, making it the largest theatre employer in the Puget Sound region. Unique in the region, the theatre company survives almost exclusively on gate receipts, without subsidy.

Currently, the 5th's subscriber season programming includes 4 to 7 shows per year, a mix of national touring musicals, locally produced revivals of musical theatre classics, and premieres of bound-for-Broadway shows. The 5th Avenue Theatre has established a tradition of being a "testing ground" for new musicals before they make their debut on Broadway, launching hits such as Jekyll & Hyde, Hairspray, and The Wedding Singer. The theatre also hosts a variety of special events, and offers a number of education and outreach programs to school-age children and adults reaching over 55,000 students, professional performers, and audiences each year

Taylor Hicks graduates from Idol to Teen Angel
by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

With over 30 million viewers tuning in each week, American Idol has indisputably become an addition to pop culture - and to Gay culture, too, as many non-hetero fans across the country helped crown Kelly Clarkson as the competition's inaugural champion and could very soon boost the mascara-lathered Adam Lambert to victory with their call-in votes. Rewind to season five, when a salt 'n' pepper haired singer from Birmingham, arriving with a pre-named cheering section called "Soul Patrol," won the universally-watched reality talent program. Taylor Hicks was named "the" American Idol in 2006, and has since recorded his own albums, headlined tours from coast to coast, and is now headed to Seattle for the live theater production of our favorite high school musical, Grease. Hicks reprises his Broadway role of Teen Angel for a 19-day run at the 5th Avenue Theater (www.5thavenue.org) beginning May 12 (note: Hicks will sit out the first two nights). While in the Emerald City, the Alabama native will give an intimate, one-night performance at The Triple Door (www.thetripledoor.net) on May 27.

As he packed his favorite sneakers and collected his personal essentials en route to Seattle, the Soul Patrol leader rang me for a brief chitchat just a few days ago. From a hotel room in Los Angeles, here's what Taylor Hicks had to say inside The Music Lounge - with a Southern twang, of course.

Albert Rodriguez: Are you keeping track of American Idol this season?

Taylor Hicks: I am. I've been able to watch this season more because of my schedule.

Rodriguez: Do you have a favorite?

Hicks: I do not have a favorite. With Adam [Lambert] being in the bottom three last week, I think it could be anybody's title this year.

Rodriguez: How did you celebrate the night you won?

Hicks: Well, I got to see my family and made some calls to really close friends. Fox [television] has this really nice afterparty for the winner and all the performers and contestants on the show - a wrap party, so to speak.

Rodriguez: You didn't get loaded and wake up with a big hangover?

Hicks: I arrived at the party around midnight and at about 2:45 in the morning I was up doing interviews. Basically after you win, you do 36 hours of press interviews continuously. It starts in LA and then you fly to New York for more press interviews.

Rodriguez: I know you did stage work in high school and college, but is Grease your first theater production on tour?

Hicks: I was always a musician, an artist, singer-songwriter. But Grease is my first venture into theater, and even acting in musicals.

Rodriguez: Is this something you'd consider moving to New York for, to pursue more aggressively?

Hicks: I definitely would consider it. I did the actual Teen Angel role on Broadway last year for three months, and now for the national tour I've reprised it. If the right role came along, I would totally be into that.

Rodriguez: Have you had any run-ins with Gay fans who maybe try to lure you to a Gay bar or get you to perform at a Pride event?

Hicks: I've had offers, but because of the Grease schedule it's been tough to get out and do shows.

Rodriguez: I know every fan is important, but in many instances Gay fans are supportive at an early stage and are loyal throughout an artist's career.

Hicks: Yes, I totally agree.

Rodriguez: So what happens post-Grease?

Hicks: After the Grease road show I will make my name available for other roles on Broadway and possibly movies, and also try to tour my brand new record, The Distance.

Rodriguez: Will your performance at The Triple Door, which is completely separate from the Grease run here in Seattle, be a combination of new music, previous recordings and cover tunes?

Hicks: There will be some songs off my brand-new record, and then songs off my previous albums that I've written and then some covers - I love doing some obscure covers.

Rodriguez: When you see Seattle on your tour itinerary, what comes to mind?

Hicks: Great vibe. There's just a great vibe about the city that I enjoy. I've spent a few nights there while on tour, but I've not been able to really stay there for a month, so I'm really excited about coming and sinking my teeth into the city. That's the great thing about going on a Broadway tour, you have time to go into a city and really explore it.

Rodriguez: Which artists at the moment do you really like?

Hicks: Well, um, let's see. I like some of the [John] Mayer albums. I'm a big fan of T-Pain, I like his stuff. I like the new Jamie Foxx single ["Blame It"], and I got to hang out with him about a week ago when I was at the Idol show. And the occasional Britney song.

Rodriguez: "Toxic"?

Hicks: Yeah, I dig on that a little bit. And then there's The Grateful Dead from the Hollywood Bowl in 1974 - you gotta throw that in there, too.

Rodriguez: You're a country boy from Alabama and they don't make food in LA like they do back home. How do you deal?

Hicks: You don't deal. You just hope you can get back there and truly deal. I know there has be some good brunch spots in Seattle, so I will be excited to taste Seattle's cuisine.

Rodriguez: If you're a seafood fan, you'll eat fish in Seattle that literally came out of the water that day.

Hicks: I love seafood. Like I said, I've only spent a limited time in Seattle, so I'm excited about spending a whole month there. I really dig the city.

Rodriguez: Maybe we'll kidnap you for an afternoon and show you a couple of good spots.

Hicks: Hey, I'm all for it.

Rodriguez: For anyone going to Grease, they should also probably check you out at The Triple Door.

Hicks: Yes, please come. The music's really good. I've spent a lot of time on the road trying to cultivate an organic, soulful sound.

Rodriguez: You'll have to break out some of those dance moves. Don't be shy.

Hicks: You know what, I'm never afraid. You gotta be fearless. You just can't be shy.

A Q&A with Taylor Hicks, who plays Teen Angel in "Grease" at the 5th Avenue Theatre
"American Idol's" Taylor Hicks, who won the 2006 "Idol" crown, is in Seattle this May, at the 5th Avenue Theatre with the tour of "Grease," playing the role of the Teen Angel, a part he also did on Broadway.

By Misha Berson

Seattle Times theater critic

Along with getting you a record deal, winning "American Idol" can also get you fast-tracked to Broadway.

That's what happened for Taylor Hicks, the silver-haired soulster who scored the "Idol" crown in 2006, in the popular TV singing contest's fifth season. Hicks drew fire and plaudits for his all-out, sometimes outrageous showmanship on the program.

For a few months last year, he brought that irrepressible energy (and some much-needed box-office mojo) to the cameo role of Teen Angel, in a now-closed Broadway revival of the retro-teen musical comedy, "Grease."

Now he's touring with "Grease," opening this week at the 5th Avenue Theatre (though Hicks won't appear in the show's preview performances, today and Wednesday).

What to expect? A Baltimore Sun critic recently opined, "Hicks hams it up so much, he should be served with a jar of mustard."

We caught up with Hicks during a busy week when he was promoting his new album, "The Distance," and about to perform on the April 29 episode of "Idol."

Q: Have you been following "American Idol" this year? Who do you think should win?

A: Yeah, I've been working a lot but TiVo-ing it when I can. ... I think it could be up for grabs. As the pressure builds, and it gets closer to the finals, the talent level really shows itself.

Q: What, in retrospect, has your experience with "Idol" meant to you? Some of your Soul Patrol fans think the program sort of disowned you after you won.

A: I don't feel that way at all. I'm very thankful and blessed to have been on that stage and get that platform. As with every winner, after a certain period of time, you start creating your own success path. But "Idol" is where everything took off for me.

Q: Your first album after "Idol," "Taylor Hicks," was very pop-oriented. What's different about "The Distance"?

A: I had a lot of time to actually write this record. I spent a year in Nashville writing it, really getting songs that fit me, and who I am as an artist. ... This definitely has my imprint on it as a songwriter and singer.

Q: It seems bluesier than your previous disc.

A: You could say there's a touch of blues in it, but it's kind of an amalgamation, a melting pot of the influences I have — definitely blues, R&B, country, rock. It has an earthy feel.

Q: What motivated you to take a small role in "Grease"?

A: I didn't think it would be in my best interest to be thrown into a lead role without any musical-theater experience whatsoever. It's really smart for me to take this role as Teen Angel, as an introductory part. ... It's not a short-term idea, it's a long-term thought. I want to understand what musical theater is, and parlay that knowledge into future things.

Q: In "Grease," you have one number but also get to perform your single "Seven Mile Breakdown" after the curtain call.

A: Yes, this is a wonderful opportunity — to be able to see so many fans across the country, and to expose them to the record. I'm also doing club gigs in some cities. [He'll play in Seattle at the Triple Door May 27.]

Q: You've expressed your love of Ray Charles, Van Morrison, and a lot of other pop musicians, old and new. What's on your eclectic playlist these days?

A: Well, I'm listening a lot to Lily Allen. And I'm into this recording of the Grateful Dead, live in New Jersey in 1974.

Who's Taylor Hicks? Grease "Teen Angel" Wows 5th Avenue's Audience

"Take a trip to a simpler time of poodle skirts, drive-ins, and T-birds.Bad boy Danny and the girl next door Sandy fall in love all over again to the tune of your favorite songs: Summer Nights, Greased Lightning
and
We Go Together
as well as additional songs from the hit movie:
Grease is the Word,
Hopelessly Devoted to You
and You're the One That I Want."

If only for a couple of hours, BF Mel and I were transported back to the 50's.

I'm a sucker for anything 50's and Grease is it for me. I loved the costumes, music, and high energy dance routines of the production at the 5th avenue. It's amazing to me how the actors and actresses can keep up that level of energy throughout the whole show. And that red hotrod.

Whose Taylor Hicks? I'm going to fess up: I have never seen American Idol. But American Idol winner and local guy, Taylor Hicks does a stint as "Teen Angel". I won't spoil it for your by telling you any more, but it's a great scene so you will have to just go see it. Now I know who Taylor Hicks is.

Taylor HicksAfter the performance, he came out and sang one of his hits and played the harmonica. He wowed the audience once again.

If you need some light and fun entertainment, this is the show for you. Nothing heavy, nothing complicated, nothing depressing. Grease is like a meringue with melted marshmallow on top. And, I mean that in a GOOD way!
Get tickets for yourself and friend or go as a group.

Another Day....Another Celebrity
This is Taylor Hicks, an Alabama boy, and the winner of season 5 of "American Idol".

He came into the studio today to talk about his appearance in "Grease", playing at the 5th Avenue Theater today, and I have to say, he couldn't have been nicer.

Taylor Hicks had earned a bit of a reputation shortly after taking the "Idol" crown of being a real head case. But none of that was evident.

He played the harmonica on the air on request, congratulated us on turning on an FM frequency to compliment our AM frequency, posed for endless photos from staff, said he'd do an extra taped interview as he waited to go on TV for his interview about 30 minutes later and said "yes", "yes", and "Yes!" to every request.

At one point, I overheard him talking about gratitude, and how he felt so lucky to be in this position.

Way to go, Taylor Hicks. You got it.

The show is fantastic!! The kids are singing and dancing, the place is PACKED, the audience is wonderful....and then the CONE! I grabbed my husbands arm....and we wait.. Boy, Taylor has to be in that thing a long time....and then it flashes, moves and opens....the audience goes nuts! What a wonderful performance....real hammy, super butt swivel, rolling eyes, perfect head and hand movements...the "I Voted for You" line really got huge laughs and applause....Taylor has perfected the timing and waited for the audience to fully appreciate this line.
His singing was supurb! It was over tooooooo quick.
Lots of applause and everyone loved the harmonica...
Curtain call and finale....lots of love for Taylor..
....He asked us if we enjoyed the show and told us the Seattle run is 98% sold out!! We were really happy to hear that!.

Teen Angel was very well received and cheered and applauded, with the big laugh on "I voted for you"! He is such a bright spot, literally and figuratively, in that show. He did come out for the curtain call and sang, but quickly disappeared to get ready to perform his single. The "DJ" quickly brought the mike up and announced the jump from 1959 to 2009 and a performance by Taylor Hicks of his new single. Except for those who left during the curtain call, the audience remained seated and there was much clapping and chair dancing along with Taylor's Seven Mile Breakdown.

Dyer family and the Byrd family ventured to Seattle to see Grease at the Fifth Avenue. I have wanted to see the musical Grease for years, so I was very excited. The musical was fantastic and it was fun to see Taylor Hicks appearing as Teen Angel. He even performed a song at the end of the show and signed autographs in the lobby. We had a great night

The show is amazing and soooooooo fun and cute! ....
Anywho then we handed him the gift we brought that included Reese's Limited Edition Elvis Peanut Butter and Bannana Creme Cups and he lit up like a Christmas tree!

We got back just in time to go to the 5th Avenue Theater with my parents. The theater is really old and beautiful inside. We saw "Grease" and I LOVED it. I think if I could go back and start college over again, I would seriously think about music theater. I think it would be so fun! The songs were great, the dancing was awesome and Taylor Hicks, even though I hated him on American Idol, was wonderful as Teen Angel. It was a funny show and I was sad when it was over.
