I almost decided not to post my thoughts about this new gig in Grease National Tour. Frankly, when I read the articles on Google at work this afternoon, my heart sank. NOT because I was upset that he was doing this, but because I knew what a lot of fans would say on the boards tonight. I was bracing for "Taylor's only in it for the money", "It's not about the music anymore", "Taylor's selling out to celebrity" etc., etc. etc. And I wasn't wrong - many people are upset about this. So, here is my opinion. And that's what it is...just my opinion. I think Taylor has given us clues all along that he wanted more than just recording and touring. He said he wants to be an Entertainer and all that encompasses. Not just make record, tour, make another record, tour it. I think he would get bored, afterall he has toured bars for many years. New opportunites have afforded him to be able to choose - if nothing else, AI has given him that much. Grease was a challenge..........and whoda' thunk that he would take a small part and make it one of the most important of the show..........and the crowd responed with enthusiastic applause, louder than anyone else.........and guess what, producers and TPTB noticed......and guess what, they asked him to go on a national tour.....and guess why?....because he can draw crowds and entertain the folks ...and it's just a guess but I'm sure they made it worthwhile pay wise....and again just guessing but maybe that is what he is counting on.............funds to pay for studio musicians, and manufacturing, distribution and promotion for a new record...........and guess what that means, wah lah new music and tour for us........so, in my opinion Grease IS all about the music. Guess I'll go now. pp |

Well Powder, I agree with you. I guess I am a fan of the man himself and not just his music. I felt the same way about Paul McCartney. I love the GUY, his personality, as well as his music. Paul starred in a move years ago called Give My Regards to Broadstreet. The movie did awful, but I loved the fact that he was in one. Paul has funny, quirky and experimental songs among his repertoire, and I love most of them, because to me they just show me more of his personality, and I just LOVE the guy. So I feel the same way about Taylor. I love HIM, his personality, so no matter what he does, I know I will enjoy him and support him. |

You ladies definately make a lot of sense. Taylor has said time & time again that he is an entertainer/performer/artist etc. That encompases a lot within that 6'1" frame of his! Maybe some of us want to have 'Taylor' appearing before us during the full event, but he is more than just a singer behind the mic. As for the 'belly-achers' ~ they are always gonna be around. That is a 'given'! Imagine all that wasted time of complaining; which changes nothing. Oh Well! As for the Grease tour ~ having given it some thought ~ I see a growing fan base of Soul Patrollers. Networking Anyone? |

About noon or so I posted this below on another thread. But when I read the thoughts here at this thread I wanted to bring my thoughts here too. And since I posted this earlier at the other thread...we have bought tickets to see Taylor in December. I am so happy! I also posted at the other thread that my daughters had wanted to take me to NY to see Grease...but some health concerns prevented that trip. Today my daughter said, " Mom, who knew when we were so sad that you couldn't go to NY...that Taylor would end up about 30 minutes from us." ******I am sure Taylor makes decisions in regard to profit...and well he should. But I am glad he has the chance to continue the role of "Teen Angel"....which he obviously found great pleasure and satisfaction in. And I see it as a very good 'avenue' to let people outside his fan base know about him. Some who might not know much about him or wouldn't maybe just go out and buy his CD (just because they don't know about him) will see him on stage in a play most people can relate to and enjoy. People who do not know about him will be in position to see his skill as a performer and to experience the musical gift of his voice, his harmonica and his "soul". I am really happy for Taylor...that he will be traveling around with the show and exposing people along the way to his talents...people who might not ever make it to NY for a Broadway show. It makes a lot of good sense to me. They are gonna know "who Taylor Hicks is". Ok...I am happy for me too, because I see the Grease tour with Taylor as 'Teen Angel' will be in Michigan in December and I know attending the show and seeing 'our boy' singing and dancing and hamming and playing the harp will be such a wonderful part of my Christmas Holiday celebrations this year. So "Teen Angel"....wear that sparkling suit and play that 'angel harp' and just enjoy every minute of your life.****** |

Ya know Tiship, it doesn't do us ( fans) any good to rant and rave on the boards because what will be , will be and we really are not privy to the why's, when's or where's of the decision making process. I think we just want to enjoy Taylor , the entertainer , in any medium he chooses. We all have our favorite Taylor: the musician, the songwriter, the soul singer, the live tour performer or the Taylor that climbs into the role of a fantasy figure.; some we like more than others. We just want the best for him and wish him well and will see what develops throughout the rest of this year and next. By the way Tish ( we were concerned about the Texas SP'ers and hope that all is well with you). Were you close to the hurricane ??? |

Really good thoughts, here. Since I am lazy, I am bringing thoughts I posted elsewhere on here....and you can see, I agree with you guys. Arguably, making music on Broadway IS a form of music making...and from what I observed, albeit from afar through vids and recaps, it looks as though Taylor "busted his buns doing it". I think that, sadly, he has had to rebuild financially and reputationally (word?) to get his career going again after the media bashing and yes, mismanagement he experienced post AI. Whose fault that is ,is another discussion entirely. But with the success he has had in the role, who can blame him for striking a deal that will allow him to a) perform b) gain some finances to invest and c) gain more exposure? As an aside, I think that Taylor is a fascinating study of the "industry". He wrote his memoirs too soon, as I think the next part could be more interesting than the first! |

Scoots, one part of your post stood out.....media bashing.....which got me thinking. I don't know diddley about the why's or what's of Taylor's decisions - but I do know he did take a bashing in the media. Not fair in my opinion but it did happen. They just loved the fact that others were outselling him......but didn't take into consideration that he doesn't fit in a convenient little niche like the others. Heck! for me that is the reason I fell for him on AI - the woods are full of rockers and country artists but how many Taylors are out there? How much media bashing has there been about his Grease run? I have heard none. I bet this feels really good to him. |

I think the fact that he IS soo different-and yet his own man and artist-is what we all liked about him. Granted we all would LOVE a new CD and tour because ultimately that is the foundation of who Taylor is, but I think he KNOWS he can always put out a CD and tour--he's done it for so long--I think he's trying something different and building avenues for the future--all the while learning and growing as an artist and as an incorporated business entity (Modern Whomp Records). Who knows? Taylor is thinking long term-so should we!! |

We were all aware that Taylor is not a trained musician, nor does he have any practical experience in any form of entertaining other than live, bar, tour training. Maybe he just wants to explore the "possibilities " ( there is that word again ....loved the commerical ) and see whether he thinks he can be fulfilled as a creative being in something other than what he has been doing for the last 13 years. Maybe he just wants to experiment with his talents and see if he is able to handle creative mediums other than what he has been used to . Maybe he just needs the money to fund his next CD.......those things are expensive and he is not making as much as you might think doing Broadway or the National Tour, but the accumulated wealth may be just what he needs to further his career. Maybe , maybe, maybe he is spreading his wings ( not angel wings ) and growing; gaining confidence in his abilities with the purpose of finding his niche........... |

THAT, is a pretty good guess, mouser. I am praying that he hits a chord (so to speak) that the mass media can pick up and run with...even without a "niche", perhaps carving out his own..... I was listening to Huey Lewis and the News today, and know that their sound carved their own niche during that era. Would be great to see that occur with "whomp" or whatever branding Taylor gives to his sound.... |

Well, well, well. It seems , Frankie Avalon, when he was doing the National Touring Company of Grease ( after his movie role and later in his career ) took the opportunity to add his own music at the end of the show. CP: So you changed it. Impressive. With your money, the house in Malibu, why tour? FA: Because, along with doing "Beauty School Dropout," I get to come out and interact with the audience, do numbers like "Venus" and "Why?" I get to take an audience not only through what Grease has become, but [through] my career. Kids know me from their Grease DVD, so they instantly respond. You can hear a pin drop when I do my old songs. ------------------------------------------------------- The original costume for Teen Angel was a leather jacketed Elvis type and Frankie changed it for the movie to the white , clean, sterile suit that matched his image. CP: So how did you happen on to Grease, the movie? FA: I saw it on Broadway before the movie. It was '77 and I got a call for the movie. I didn't want to do it. The character was an extension of Presley -- leather jacket, long sideburns, the gyrations. But they wouldn't take no. So I met with Allan Carr and Randal Kleiser and told them I wanted something else. Something my style. So they said do it all in white, make it like heaven, make it like me singing "Bobby Sox to Stockings." Then I said yes. Information comes from : http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2003-06-12/theater.shtml and http://www.aislesay.com/PA-GREASE.html Thanks to MK and cochem for finding these bits of Grease trivia.
