American Idol 5 was a huge ratings success largely due to a Southern gentleman named Taylor Hicks. His unique blend of blue-eyed soul with a 70's flavor made him a fan favorite. His humility, focus and ability to give any song his own special twist carried him to the winner's circle. "Do I Make You Proud" he shouted to eager fans............... YOU BETCHA.!!!! The votes are in. The winners have been chosen. The final 10 climb aboard their tour bus for an exciting summer of fun, music and meeting the fans. ![]() Bottom row l. to r.Bucky Covington, Katherine McPhee, Ace Young, Kelly Pickler, Taylor Hicks Back row l. to r. Nine Idol performers (not 10) kick off the tour Updated 7/5/2006 11:42 PM ET USA TODAY's Whitney Matheson reports live from the first show of the American Idol tour. The surprise: The field of performers was reduced to nine for the tour kickoff; Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee couldn't perform because of "severe bronchitis and laryngitis." "I'm disappointed, and I am sorry to disappoint my fans," McPhee said in a statement. During the show, Chris Daughtry, Ace Young, Bucky Covington and Elliott Yamin dedicated Guns N' Roses' Patience to the ailing McPhee. The opener: Mandisa was first on stage with a powerful rendition of Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman. In between: Young worked the crowd into a frenzy when he unbuttoned and removed his jacket during George Michael's Father Figure. Paris Bennett drove the crowd to its feet with Beyonc's Crazy in Love, and Covington drifted into the crowd to shake hands during Dobie Gray's Drift Away. Daughtry wowed fans with Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive and Styx's Renegade, while Yamin followed with a soulful rendition of Luther Vandross' All My Love and Elvis Presley's Trouble. Idol winner Taylor Hicks performed Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock, played electric guitar on Bob Seger's Hollywood Nights and brought his frenetic dance moves to Marvin Gaye's What's Goin On The closer: Hicks wrapped up the show with a cover of the Doobie Brothers' Takin' It to the Streets. Daughtry belted out Queen's We Are the Champions. The rest of the Idols joined, following with a group performance of James Brown's Living in America. Onstage quotables: "I'm a living witness that dreams do come true. If you can dream it, you can achieve it," Mandisa told the crowd. Before launching into Melissa Etheridge's I'm the Only One, Kellie Pickler revealed that she recently had her wisdom teeth removed. Her cheeks became so swollen, "I was afraid I was going to turn into a hot-air balloon and blow away," she said. The crowd: Families dominated the crowd, many of them mothers with "tween"-age daughters and their friends. Though the wardrobe was casual, all Idol garb was encouraged: Homemade, glittery shirts and official tees were common. The best T-shirt sighting of the evening: "Vermont is for Hicks." The merch: Idol T-shirts were $25 to $30, while show programs and teddy bears sporting Idol shirts were $20. Keychains and photographs of the stars sold for $5, and buttons were $3. The inside scoop: Four of the 10 finalists met with press and select fans before the show. "I never get nervous," Bennett said, noting that fellow finalist Lisa Tucker has become her best friend on tour. Bennett said she plans to record an album and several cartoon voice-overs when the tour wraps. Tucker, meanwhile, said she plans to explore ideas for a sitcom. What's on Tucker's new iPod? Jimi Hendrix, Gavin DeGraw and Mariah Carey. And as for Covington's favorite part of the tour: "Not getting judged." 2. ET ONline Taylor Hicks and the Idols on Tour! The Pop Tarts™ Presents American Idols Live Tour begins on July 5, but first ET catches up with Top 10. It is just days before the Pop Tarts™ Presents American Idols Live Tour begins on July 5 in Manchester, NH at the Verizon Wireless Arena, and the season five "American Idol" Top 10 are busy rehearsing for their summer-long performances -- but not too busy to talk to ET about life after the "Idol" competition. "I freaked out about it a little bit," "Idol" crown-holder TAYLOR HICKS tells ET when asked how it feels to have a No. 1 single with "Do I Make You Proud." "I was in a minivan a year ago making about $50 a night playing bars, clubs and the occasional wedding. The music that I am making now and that I am going to get to make is special." But fame hasn't gone to his head. "Somebody said, 'Just go out and stand by the ocean and realize how small we all are,'" he explains about his down-to-earth attitude. "You have to be grounded and stay true to who you are. If you aren't, everything falls down around you." 3. At tour rehearsal, top 10 finalists promise duets, group numbers, surprises.By Corey Moss .... but winner Taylor Hicks was present and coughing up more than anyone else about his American Idols Live set. "Expect some vintage rock and roll. I'll probably do some Beatles, some obscure Beatles," Hicks said. "And Kat, I love singing with her. I'll do some stuff with other people. Harmonica, of course. I'll be playing a lot of guitar. On the show I wasn't allowed to be an instrumentalist. Now I'm free as an artist, and I'm very excited about that." 4. Taylor Hicks anxious to ride tour bus Some pop stars want fame and money. "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks just wants to ride the tour bus. Hicks gets to do just that on the "American Idols Live" cross-country tour, which kicked off Wednesday in Manchester, N.H. The tour, which reunites Hicks with castmates from the fifth edition of the hit Fox show, ends Sept. 24 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. "I've always wanted to be on a bus. ... My home has been on the road since even before `American Idol,'" the 29-year-old Alabama native told AP Radio in a recent interview. As a struggling musician en route to his next gig, Hicks had hoped to travel on his own tour bus one day. "You would see buses on the road in Alabama going to their next destination, and I would always dream about being on one and now I have the opportunity," he said. These days, Hicks says he prefers to travel rather than stay at his Birmingham apartment. "It's been there and it's been nice to come home, but (I'm) only there for a few days and I'm on the road," he said. "So a tour bus with some good, cold iceberg lettuce is probably where I'm gonna stay." "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee was sidelined with severe bronchitis and laryngitis for Wednesday and Thursday's tour shows, Manchester's Verizon Wireless Arena announced. Source: The Associated Press Date Published: July 6, 2006 SOUL PATROL MEMORIES: 1. UHadMeatWooHoo I saw him on the AI tour in Worcester MA. We were so far away the Idols looked like miniature people. I remember the anticipation waiting all the way to the end for him. I was speechless after the experience. All it did was leave me wanting more-much more . ![]() 2. earthangel13 He wore a blinding white jacket, dark red shirt and jeans...Taylor in person is a big boy with a HUGE stage presence. I think the crowd response was biggest for Taylor and Chris...deafening...my ears are still ringing. All the idols were sooooo good but Taylor is in a class by himself...everyone else looked like your friends next door, just folks, but Taylor already looks bigger than life... a star all the way. 3. earthangel13 ...I'm happy to say he comes across as a musician not as an flash in the pan celebrity. courtesy of idolstuff064. Donna This year's American Idols Live tour kicked off on Wednesday night in Manchester, NH, and from all reports, it is a keeper. Taylor fans will not be disappointed as he rips through seven or eight songs, plays guitar and harmonica, and of course, shows off his crazy dance steps. ....set list ...it's eclectic. Donna. 5. Lynne Anne I think the main thing about Taylor is that he knows what his fans want. He then does everything to give it to them. For instance, his dancing, he knows even when he is dead tired, we want to see it and he gives us a great show. He also knows that Harmonica slays us and will tease us with it. Taylor is so full of energy, stamina and smarts; he plays to the audience before him. That is why, three concerts attended, all three were different and everyone was happy. Me, I liked them all, but then I love Taylor. I think he is the best performer out there right now. I look down the road and see an International Star! But to watch that boy become the music.... just turns me on! There are no other words to describe Taylor for me right now. The man I saw on Thursday, July, 6, was nothing short of Magnificent. His energy, his stamina, his HAIR as Taylor says, his head is a headlight, well it is. My first note of Taylor was that his head was shining. I saw this huge grey mass of hair, coming towards me and screamed. It was so beautiful; all I could do was shake my head. Let me say this, when Taylor arrived, the whole atmosphere changed. Electricity and power had arrived full force. courtesy of pinkpear885Taylor enters the venue for each performance , coming through the aisle singing "Jailhouse Rock" . Thanks to mwhitney for this glimpse of that entry. Hollywood Nights : Livin' For The City A special thank you to tay-on-line for the collection of photographs at these venues. Thanks yous to pboyers for a bevy of comments regarding the AI 5 Tour. Many thanks to the fabulous Media at TMO and TTHC. |
