A hot night in song for area’s Idol fans
No ‘McPheever’ to heat up the stage

MUSIC REVIEW

It was a case of life imitating TV.

The American Idols tour pulled into the DCU Center last night for the first of a two-night Worcester gig. On the bus were nine of the top 10 finalists from the talent show that caused a countrywide sensation in its fifth season, a time when other shows often are limping off to cable-repeat land.

Top vote-getter Taylor Hicks was there, as wildly engaging in real life as his gyrating, frenetic TV persona would lead you to imagine.

Missing, however, was runner-up Katherine McPhee who was forced out of the lineup due to severe bronchitis and laryngitis, a sickness which had also sidelined her for the two-night tour kick-off in Manchester, N.H., Wednesday and Thursday.

She will not perform at tonight’s DCU show either. There is no word on when her many McPheevered fans will see the sultry songstress again but it might not be soon, given the heartfelt singing tribute four of the male idols sang in her honor last night. Its title: “Patience.”

But, even Kat-less, the troupe of young silver-throated phenoms managed to put on a show that ranged from solid in the first half to superb in the second half.

In between, there was mostly magic and only a few glitches — Paris Bennett ordering the crowd of 14,000 to “Get Up!” with the same sharply demanding tone one uses to order a dog to “Sit down!,” and a way way over-made-up Kellie Pickler fluffing lyrics to Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight.” (Perhaps that was because she was nervous about falling off a broken, sky-high stiletto heel that had to be glued back on just before she took the stage.)

Aside from those relatively bitsy bumps, it was a show that started off strong and built to a soaring finale as one tele-favorite after another performed in the same order that they were voted off the show.

Mandisa was first on stage with Chaka Kahn’s “I’m Every Woman” and her special brand of queen-size charisma.

Hollywood handsome Ace Young followed, to the squealing delight of many elementary school and ’tweenage girls in the audience.

But their screeches crescendoed into the eardrum-shattering range in the second half, which kicked off with doleful rocker Chris Daughtry, the man many thought should have won the top title.

He delivered “Whole Lotta Love,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Renegade” with his signature combination of fire and feeling.

But the first truly great song of the night came when jazzman Elliott Yamin joined Daughtry for “Savin’ Me.”

Few of the Idols, save Hicks, are seasoned performers, having honed their skills mainly on their television trial-by-fire.

But the Yamin/Daughtry duet was a polished performance that launched the show to new heights.

Hicks kept the energy high, making his entrance through the audience toward the stage with “Jailhouse Rock,” a nervous security guard in tow.

“Hollywood Nights,” a medley of soul tunes and a cover of the Beatles “Don’t Let Me Down” highlighted Hicks’ unique talents — which alternate between extremes: crazily whacking his body over and over with a tambourine one minute, and the next singing so tenderly it probably could make the famously acerbic Idol judge Simon Cowell cry.

Taylor Hicks is Hot!

Seems as though the media can't get enough of Taylor Hicks. There are articles about "first crush," his supposed displeasure in "Do I Make You Proud," his numerous impromptu appearances, his commercial success, and of course, his preparation for the Idol tour show, which kicks off on July 5 in Manchester, NH.

Taylor has numerous fansites, and in an exclusive interview with Gray Charles, let his fans know that www.taylorhicks.com will be up and running soon. No question, Taylor Hicks is HOT right now, and his popularity will only increase as the tour winds its way through North America.

But, of course, there's a down side to all of this. Taylor is walking a thin line right now. As a seasoned musician, he recognizes the need to establish his credibility from the get-go. He can't afford to be perceived as being "cheesy," and must not only focus on his tour performances, but also on planning his first album. He doesn't have much time, after all. What he does this year really will set the tone for the next few years.

Taylor's set list for the tour show should be a pretty good indicator as to how much leeway he's being given. He has said in interviews that he will be playing guitar and harmonica, and is pleased with the songs he's selected. Hopefully, he'll be able to keep them fresh over the course of 60 shows. All of this is cloaked in mystery right now, but certainly, after the first show, all will be revealed. I think Taylor (and all the Idols) will be totally blown away by the reception that they are going to get on the road. It's going to be wild!

I wish all the Idols a great tour and look forward to seeing them in Syracuse on September 17. We'll continue to follow Taylor and the others on the charts, and have some updates from the road, including reviews, the set list, and other tidbits.

I saw the "Full Woo" in Worcester, MA. He was doing the full 8 song set then - it was the 4th show into the tour. It was just absolute heaven.
